I am in the market for new tires on my 14 2500, 285/60/20.
I ran Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT for the last 28,000 miles, and they are now down to the wear bars.
I've been happy with the Coopers, but hoping that another brand may give me some more mileage out of their all-terrain tires.

-Cooper Discoverer AT3 still have wonderful reviews, and I've seen some posts out on the web stating people have achieved 50-60k out of these tires on an HD.

-Toyo Open Country AT3 is the other choice I'm looking at, also has some good reviews, but it's a newer tire, so not as much real world experience from reviewers yet.

I've always heard HD trucks eat tires faster than other vehicles. Is 30k miles normal life for an all terrain tire on an HD?

Yes.

Compound has to be softer to grip, and heavier truck combine for shorter life.

My son had K02's on his 2018 2500 and towed his TT about 7000 miles and got over 40,000 miles on those tires. They were still 'usable' when he replaced them but were pretty much worn out

This is the type of stuff I wonder about, why are there such drastically different outcomes using the same tires on similar trucks. I've heard from a few places that K02s are some of the worst offenders for heavy trucks, but great for mid size vehicles. Coworker used to have an older F-250, and put a set of those on about once a year.

I've got Toyo Open Country AT2s that are at 50k and I've got a 16th left before the wear bars.
I rotate every 5k, and keep pressures at 50/40 unless towing.

I'll be trying the AT3s next

13/32 @ 22,000 miles. I fully expect to get 50,000 miles out of these Nitto Terra Grapplers G2. I don’t tow and have the Hemi vs. Cummins. If you have a Cummins engine, I am sure the torque and extra weight will negatively affect the tread life but I am also positive you will get more than 28,000 miles.

I used to run General Grabber AT2's (now the ATx series) on my trucks, and would routinely get 50k+ out of them regardless of the truck they were on.

I got about 50K out of the stock Duratracs on the Power Wagon.

A lot of it is in what you are doing with them and how often you rotate them. I rotate every 10k, because then I'm just getting it done every 2nd oil change. Works out well, but I used to rotate every 6k when I had trucks that needed 3k oil changes.

If you are keeping them balanced and rotated, don't do hard starts/stops/corners, and aren't towing every day, you'll get a decent amount of miles out of them. If you don't rotate often, run over everything in the road, and generally abuse them, you're not going to get much for miles out of them.

I think ~30-35K is about what I get out of agressive AT tires on a HD truck (Cummins not a hemi). The torque and weight of the diesel will obviously be tougher on tires then a hemi so just make sure you are making an apples to apples comparison when someone says they got xxxx miles out of a set.

I agree, a lot is the usage. All in town miles with a lot of turns will always wear faster than pure highway miles

He drives all over the country and has them rotated regularly. Probably only towed his TT about 4000 miles on those tires. That 7000 mile number is total since he got the truck. He bought the K02's with 12,000 on his truck since he kept getting stuck at jobsites with the factory firestones. After the 2nd or 3rd time having to get pulled out his company bought him the K02s. He now has close to 80,000 on the truck but has a different brand tire that i have never heard of but he is happy with those too. So facts that i know for sure is between the 2 sets of tires he has about 68,000 miles on them and quite a bit of that towing on highways and alot of 'off-road' driving. By off-road i don't mean MOAB type stuff, just on dirt and mud at jobsites. I don't know that 40,000 miles is the exact number but know it is close and like i said, 68,000 miles between the 2 sets. His K02's still had a little tread left but he was leaving to tow from Pittsburgh to Baytown, TX and wanted the new tires before he left. Probably could have got another 5000-10,000 but his company only gives him a short window to get from site to site and he didn't want to have any problems so replaced them before he left.

Oh, and he has a 6.4. I'm sure the tires on a Cummins will wear faster

Gotta say, I was getting 50k+ out of AT tires on diesel trucks. So it IS possible. Rotation, balancing, and driving style go a long way toward it though. As said above, lots of highway (or just plain straight-line) driving will wear them much less than lots of turning at low speeds.

This is the reason I stopped running BFG on my diesel and went to toyo open country tires. Got almost 75% more miles life out of them through multiple sets of both. However, both have changed tread compound since then.

ok. Son was just here. He said he got over 50,000 on his K02's so truck would have had at least 62,000 on it when he got his current tires. He told me the brand but I never heard of them and forget what they were but he said he has 90,000 miles on it now so he has about 28,000 on these and said they are holding up well.

Here is a pic of the K02's right after he got them. They were stock size

My KO2’s are almost toast with 24k on my PW. About 1/2 what I got on my 1500. Rotated every 5k.

Yeah, I'm surprised he is getting that mileage out of those, my experience was very different as well.
Same for the Duratracs, can't believe a guy is getting 50K out of those, they are by far the worst AT tire I have seen for wear.

We the generics he has on it now have about 28,000 on them and he said they are still pretty decent. I have 22,000 on my factory Firestones and still have about 1/3 tread left. These are 6.4's so that might be why you guys aren't getting the same mileage out of them? Also on the factory 20" rims but not sure that would make a difference. But even so alot of those miles were towing too. But most of the miles were highway. Here is a list of his trips all towing:

Altoona PA to Pittsburgh, PA
Pittsburgh PA to Williston, ND
Williston, ND to Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh to Baytown, TX
Baytown, TX to Thief River Falls, MN
Thief River Falls, MN to Pittsburgh, PA
Pittsburgh, PA to Altoona
Altoona PA to Pittsburgh, PA

There were also a few shorter trips of few hours back and forth.

He got the K02s while he was in ND and replaced them right before he left for Baytown, TX. But when he was in ND he had to drive from one site to the other back and forth a few times a day and it was a 2 hour trip. Those were not towing anything but he was there 5 months so about 200 miles a day 6 days a week for 5 months.

Netter yet, I can tell you exactly how many miles he got on the K02's...lol. He got them with 12,000 mile son the truck and I went with him to Baytown and took pics of the speedometer to check gas mileage so this should be very accurate.

So he got the tires at 12,000 miles and this pic was our first stop about 150 miles after we left so probably about 64,500 when he got the new generics put on. So thats about 52,000 miles on the K02s and so far 25,000 on the generics and he said they are still in good shape and said I should buy them for mine since they were 1/2 as much and wore just as good

Tire life is such a subjective thing that I can only recommend you take all comments lightly and with caution. I've seen some AT tires go 60K when the owner made monthly air pressure checks, rotated every 5k, aligned/replaced worn suspension parts as needed, drove conservatively. I've also seen AT tires go to the cords...wiped out...in 15K miles by some beer-swilling redneck with 200K miles on his truck, squeeky worn out ball joints, 25lbs of air in each tire, and him swearing, "Them there tires is junk and I'll never buy another set". And there's always the guy who swears radials are never gonna be as good as bias ply tires were in the old days....

I am on my 2nd set of Toyo AT2’s. The last set had 31k and still had meat, has to replace because of a screw near the sidewall. This was on a Cummins.
