Hey Fella's

I was talking to a friend of mine, and he was asking me when I plan on finally upgrading my stereo ( among the other things I want to mod lol ). He has a full Alpine system in his 2011 Silverado. I told him my plans etc, and that I really didn't want a sub. His truck does sound good, but I hate how the subs are mounted under the rear seats. I know for a fact that I do not want that kind of set up, as I feel like the sub is muffled ?. Any system I have had in the past has either been in a SUV, or Hatchback car with wide open air space.

Has anyone ever mounted subs in a different location in there truck ? I rarely have people in my back seat. I was wondering if anyone has mount a sub directly behind the center console/bench seat ( where the floor is raised up for the driveline ) and have the sub sit height level with my rear seats ? I would get a grille guard for the sub to protect it. I was thinking a small 8'' or 10'' sub could be mounted in a square box right there.

Something Like this, but without the " arm rest " portion of the box, and have the sub firing upwards...

Looks like a good option if you do that find a sub that is mechnically quiet as that will be right behind you and you won't want to hear the damn thing move. Like that audiobahn in the picture would be a no go in my opinion.

yea no, def not that sub in the picture lol.

I would prefer a simple square box without that arm rest looking part of that box. depending on what size box I could fit, would determine if I get a shallow or regular depth sub. If this idea was to come a reality for me, my ideal sub would be about 200w-250w RMS. I don't want something that is going to rattle my face off lol.

Sundown E type or Skar Audio ivx would sound pretty good in there and they run about 300w rms and will probably take more then that cause both companies always over build subs.

If you heard my under seat sub, I can almost guarantee you the word "muffled" would not be a word you would use to describe it.

One single JL Audio 12w3 v3.

Mind you, this system was build for Rock and Country primarily..

If you're a boom-boom 808 type of listener, this may not apply.

I have all that on my Iphone / Sirius XM. I def don't want the " booming rap bass " I prefer an accurate / punchy sound.

Informal - What full set up do you have ?

I'm going to be building a box to replace my center console most likely. Hoping to start the project soon. It'll house two 8" Sundown Audio SA-8's.

if you have the center front seat instead of the console build the box there just like Nubster said.

I have a Pioneer DD headunit, A Single side Foxbox that I improved on somewhat bu using dynamat underneath the depth cup, as well as dynamatting the area where it resides.. I used 3 brackets to mount the box firmly in place.

My fronts are : Amazon.com: Kenwood Excelon KFC-XP184C 7" Component Speaker System: Car Electronics

rears are Amazon.com: Kenwood KFC-X183C eXcelon 7-Inch Oversized Custom Fit 2-way Speaker System: Electronics

Powered by Alpine amps.. can't remember the models #'s atm..

Sounds incredible.

I planned to use the Foxbox as a stopgap until I build my own from fiberglass, but honestly, after tuning it, and tweaking the mounting, sound deadening etc.. I may leave it as is.

I have to agree that if the box is done correctly it will not sound muffled. now if your sub is bottoming out on the bottom of the seat then it may.

I have personally listened to a truck with a box right behind the center console like you mentioned. It housed a 12" JBL MKIII ported. It sounded really good and got really loud. This was in a SQ set up. I was impressed. Sub was firing up with port facing the back seats.
Iam currently building a center console enclosure for my two 12" Arc Audio Blacks. Sealed enclosure @ 2.4 cu/ft* Subs will receive 500 watts each and that will be replacing the under-seat location they're currently in....I would not say they're "muffled" at all....

Thanks for the suggestions guys !

Since I only want about 200-300w RMS out of whatever I would install. I guess I feel like that wouldn't be enough power to really push sound through the seats ? what kind of power are you guys running in the under seat boxes ?

I'm not doing mine under the seats but I plan to throw about 800 watts RMS to my sub.

I know and understand your concern with the subs becoming muffled under the seats...but it doesnt play out like that. There is zero output difference (with my application) whether my seats are up or down. Ive tried with many different types of music. I ran two Alpine type S 12's back in the day at 300 watts each. They got really loud but type S subs are really efficient too.
My Arc Blacks are not as efficient hence the 500 watts each, but they would still be pretty damn loud with 300 watts. Look for an efficient sub and you'll have plenty of power. Honestly bro, i would not worry about muffling your subs output with the rear seat being down...it's simply should not be a concern.
