I have a 96 Dodge Ram 2500 V10 8.0L and the alternator went out a few weeks ago. I went and got a new alternator and I installed it. Once installed and the truck was started up the serpentine belt would come off the alternator pulley. So we went back to Advance Auto and had them put the old pulley on the new alternator cause the new pulley was narrower. I then re-installed the alternator and the belt still wants to come off the alternator pulley. The pulley looks like it sits closer toward the engine than the rest of the pulleys. Is there any way to adjust that so the pulley is sitting further away from the engine and aligns with the rest of the pulleys?

You could possibly put a spacer or shim on the alternator bolt that holds the alternator to the bracket, moving it a bit further out. But first I would double check to see if you got the right alternator for your vehicle. It should fit exactly like the old one, and the pulley should be in the same place as the one you took off. Did you put everything back on exactly like you took the old one off? Dave

Yea, I put everything back on it and I put everything where it was supposed to go. I am going to take it off and go back in and have them measure the shaft and see if they are the same length. If they gave me the wrong part then I guess they will have to swap it. Who knows maybe ill get a discount cause I have been in there twice already and had to take the alternator off once as is and now ill have to pop it off again...

Its easy to compare the old one with the new one as to distance out for pulley from the fwd point of the alt bracket that sits in the mounting position on the motor in which the bolt goes thru. Good Luck.
