Another Diff Question

The differential size on my 16' Ram 2500 w/6.4 is 9.25 front & 11.5 rear correct? I am looking to order some 4.56's here soon & one shop is telling me I cannot get AAM 4.56 for my truck. Only 3.73 & 4.10. I am fairly certain they have them for the rear end, but one place I noticed it said AAM in the description & Yukon? I am going to be pulling heavy so I want a sturdy gear that doesn't whine!

Pretty sure AAM brand ring and pinion only goes to a 4.10. With that said there are other aftermarket options that go lower. Yukon, Nitro, etc. It will probably be listed as AAM (the axle type), Nitro, Yukon, etc (being the brand of the gear set).

Below is what I dug up on C&M Gearworks Website. I have seen the AAM 11.5 & 9.25's on other websites & it seems the 9.25's are all out of stock everywhere. I am not against using another brands but from the research I have done on here most guys prefer the AAM over others for durability & quietness.

This is a genuine AAM gear set (SKU: 40005988) in a 4:56 ratio for the leaf spring 11.5 rear end found in GM and Dodge applications. This can be used in a coil spring rear end if you use the special pinion bearing kit that we have available (PK11.5CONV).

This is a genuine AAM ring and pinion (SKU: 40146853) in a 4:56 ratio that fits 2014 and newer Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 series trucks with the 9.25 front differential and 12 bolts on the cover as opposed to the 14 bolt cover on earlier models.

C&M Gearworks is who I used for my gear install!! They are very knowledgable and know there stuff!! I would give them a call they will get you set up!!

From what I read about it, yes, install has a lot to do with how quiet they are. But I have also heard that some are just not precisely cut as others, resulting in some whine.

One shop that is giving me a quote use Motive Gears. Anyone on here have good luck with them?

I’ve used Motives in the 1 tons of my K5 Blazer, no issues.

All gears make some noise, The better the quality gear set the quieter they are.

Install is also very important for minimal noise.

Even in a quality brand gear set, you can get a set that that is at the edge of manufacturers spec/tolerance for run out etc and will be noisier.

Cheap gears are a crap shoot in my opinion, you may get lucky and get a good set.

I agree to some point but your at the other end of the spectrum then the whine i think the o.p is talking about. You buy cheap crap thats on you. Any reputable gear manu makes nice quite gears when installed correctly. If you can hear it something is off.

I only mention that all gears make noise, because noise or acceptable noise is subjective. You can get some noise in any rear end at certain speeds or operating conditions if you know how to drive it.

I have had customers bring back brand new trucks complaining of rear end noise, went for a road test with them and agreed the rear end was noisier than normal. Or noisier than other new trucks on the lot.

Rebuilt the rear end, new ring and pinion, set it up perfect, quieter than any other new truck on the lot.

Customer returns complaining its still noisy. Only because they have in their head something is wrong, so they are super tuned into listening for noise while playing with the throttle at various speeds until they hear something.

Oh yeah... there are certain speeds that you can hear the gear whine in just about anything. I think it is more noticeable in HD Trucks of any brand.

The installer that I am using is saying I will have to get a new front carrier for the 4.56? I thought with the 9.25" front end you were good all the way up to 5.13's? He is also requesting that they pull the rear diff cover before ordering to see how many bolt ring gear I have. From the little research I have done looks like 12 bolt. I would think with the VIN# he should be able to have all of this information. Kind of getting nervous about the installer I picked! They have been in business for over 50 years so I would think they know what they are doing.

Yeah, my guy I am talking to seems pretty confident about what needs don . He even researched the forums himself about the 5.13s to see how they work and said he is willing to give it a shot since he hasn't done one. Nothing about changing the carrier at all though all the times I have spoken to him.

Yeah there are a lot of guys on here that have had 4.56 or 4.88's installed & none of them said they had to change the carrier. Seems like I read some where that trucks around 2010-2012 maybe had to have a different carrier but I want to say they were not the 9.25" axle either. Does make me nervous... this is the whole reason I am letting the installer order the gears cause I didn't want to make a mistake & have my truck sit in the shop for weeks while they wait on the correct parts.

I do agree with this my 2500 gets some at certain on off peddle that i dont think is a prob

Problem with that is from what I have researched AAM does not make anything bigger than the 4.10 for the front 9.25" axle. So I think you have to go with Yukon or Nitro for anything above that. Not sure where he is getting his information. I am going to speak with him sometime this morning.
