So this summer I noticed my truck (16' 2500 w/6.4) developed the Hemi Tick. At the time I couldn't figure out if it was the lifters on the drivers side bank or the manifold. I decided to change the oil a little early since I was pulling a trailer most of the summer. I think I was just over 5,000mi. on this change. After I changed oil the tick went away. I thought well maybe all of the heavy towing & summer heat the oil broke down early & just needed to be changed. I am about 1,300 miles into this oil change & it has started to come back. No trailer pulling & obviously no summer heat. Since new I have been using the Penz. 0W-40 with either Wix XP filter or Fram Synthetic. Any ideas why this is happening part way through a oil change cycle?

some engines have fairly loud pcv system which makes audible ticking noise and is normal. to untrained ear it could be mistaken for lifters. also some fuel injectors make ticking or clicking sounds as normal condition. if your certain its lifters you might want to have a dealer check it

My truck 2016 6.4 has a constant tick also. Dealer said it’s normal. I’m trying another dealer and contacted ram. It’s also worse when it’s warm going to try and get in dealer next week

im not saying you dont have a tapping lifter but most people dont know what theyre listening for. lifters are more of a tap sound. not a crisp tick or click. like i said, theres several things in the engine bay that click as normal operation

My truck has about 12,800 miles on it now and I've had clatter of some sort on cold start at least a few times for sure.

Seems like when it's done it, it's been when I've only ran it a few minutes to move it out and then back into my shop to make room. Then the next morning it clattered on cold start. If I run it normally, to work and back, it's quiet the next morning.

Even with this sometimes it does not clatter on cold starts so I'm not sure what is going on. It's so infrequent. im not worrying about it right now

Most of the time it's quiet. I've been using a MOPAR oil filter on it since new. I wonder if they have a silicon ADBV?

I've been thinking about going to a fram ultra the next change.. but still not sure yet. PUP 0-40 since new also. Obviously I don't put a lot of miles on it so I change oil annually regardless of limited miles.

I've had the same issue/condition on both my 6.4 and my previous 5.7 and I attribute it to the oil filter. My rational is similar and the quick start truck, move truck, shut off truck situation does not heat up the oil enough to make the ADBV pliable. I think once the truck is shut off the valve is sort of stuck in the open position and you lose the prime in the oil system. Next time you start you have lifter clatter until the system re-primes itself.

Tick got worse took it to jim Browne in Tampa about a week ago. They were great. Admitted there was a issue right away checked exhuast manifolds no leaks. They diagnosed as cam and lifters. They replaced just the drivers side lifters and camshaft. Even though they originally told me they were doing all of them there was a miscommunication between tech and service writer. Because Chrysler will only pay for what they can prove is wrong. I’ve had it back about a week it sounded good when I picked it up. The tick is starting to come back though. I’ve proubly gone 400 miles.

Should of replaced all of the lifters especially with that new cam it may have wiped out another lifter roller.

Yes they should have. That’s why I stressed that to them so when they told me they were doing all my was happy till 2 days later I figured out they didn’t then 3 days after it started ticking again but not as bad. They just wasted 14 hours and maybe another cam. My old cam looked ok had minimal wear the lifters failed internally weren’t holding pressure and staying pumped up
