Have a 96 dodge ram 1500 with a 5.9 motor few months ago was driving and had accelerated quicker than I normally would, long story short tho it blew black smoke, and later that day it broke down the engine was still running but the rpm was reading 0, I called a towed truck and upon unloading it found the flat bed of the tow truck was covered in oil further examination can not find a drop of oil in the truck, i do not know where to start. Is this multiple issues at once or one serious issue?

Can't find a drop of oil IN or ON the truck. Huge difference. Black smoke and a running engine with no tach reading, would mean some kind of sensor/electronic issue is likely. A lot of smoke (though blue or white would be more likely) and no oil IN the truck would indicate mechanical malfunction - to put it kindly - in the engine. No oil ON the truck, but plenty of oil IN the ruck, with oil ON the tow ruck would probably indicate that the oil came from another source, (rear end, transfer case, tranny or even a completely unrelated vehicle).

No oil in the truck, plenty on the truck. So it's multiple issues? But I will start testing sensors when I can maintain oil inside the truck.

Thank you I'll replace the oil pan gasket and see if I can keep oil in the truck, and start test sensors do you happen to know what sensors I should be testing? I'm having to fix and hope at this point because I can not find a computer to fit this year to read any codes.

I checked the next day but it was tight and not doubled ringed, couldn't find any where that looked to be leaking just excessive oil around the pan that looked fresh, and wasn't there when I changed it the week prior.
