Any consensus on when to do first oil change?

Engines leaving the factory are ready for the road and do not require break in.

That's why there is no special 'break in' oil in mass-produced engines. It's also why the timing of the first oil change 'is what it is' in your owners manual. Ram will fully warrant your engine for the full term with nothing more than this.

But, if you want to change it sooner/replace it with something else, that's completely up to you. If it makes you more confident in your truck, makes you happy, gives you more peace of mind, that's certainly worth something.

(I know it varies by location, and I'm sure there are GOOD techs employed at some spots, but I'd certainly be more worried about 'Jiffy Lube' than I would about finding the 'top' oil / best time for the 1st change,,, I personally knew a guy who worked at one,,, The horror stories are true,,)

just go to the dealer. It's like $40 and and they have that mopar express thing where it has to be done in under 45 min..

Unless your dealer is far.
I did mine at 5000 mi. I believe manual say like 7 or 8k

Dealer takes too long here. Never tried the Jiffy Lube here but i went there today to see if they had the ultra in 5w-20. Its a real small one and they were very friendly. I will be able to stand in front of truck and watch. I would not mind going to the dealer if it did not take too long.

Good Plan!

That's what I did for many years with the Company truck,,, Keep an eye on 'em and let 'em know if they accidently miss something,,,

Back then, not greasing all the front suspension (on a simple 2WD) was usually what I'd catch 'em on. Upper ball joints were the most common 'miss'. (Not a concern nowadays)

Also had another 'lube joint' where I occasionally took my Chebby to. Those guys did good work as well.

The guy I knew used to work in a Jiffy lube decades ago. There was a certain Toyota car he said that was a ****** to get the oil filter off of. He told me if it came in with a JL filter on it, he'd simply wipe the filter clean and leave it.

Yikes!

How many miles is considered broken in?

I hear do not go Synthetic until the engine is broken in.

I understand the minimum change with factory oil must be around 3000.

Figuring on changing the factory Oil around 1500 then at 3000 put Ams Oil Sig in there.

Curious what everyone does and why?

Thanks!
My Engine 318 (1987) was remanufactured last month and the rebuilder who has over 30 years experience said basically to hold off on the synthetic oil for 5000 kms. (3000miles) He also said to stay off the 5W20 and to use 10W 30 which still has zinc as part of the ingredients which protects engine parts in motors of this vintage. Anybody else whose heard this??
