If you did, how did you do it. I'm thinking scuff, prime, then paint. Any hidden tricks needed.

Plastic. Nothing to it. Then - in 3 months - if falls apart.
Plastic is tricky to paint. I've painted a lot of thing and trust me.. you'll want to do the following:
Wash it really good with dish soap and a gray 3M Scotch pad (body shop supply)
Spray it down and wipe with a mold release/wax remover spray and wipe with a red 3M Scotch pad.
Then use a high build primer (NOT ETCHING) with very light coats with about 10 minutes between coats. SEM makes a great primer in a spray bomb. Once you have about 3-4 coats - wet sand with 400 grit ...
Then you're ready to paint.
If you've done it before which I am sure you haven't - you just got the the easier part..
Paint.. But don't use rattle cans for this part!
Good luck doing it yourself. It's a learning process for sure.

If you are wanting to paint it black due to fading, I would suggest using forever black instead. It is a dye. Needs to be cleaned good before application but no priming and stuff.
