Update
Removed rack and pinion from truck, was able to do it without removing wheels came out pretty easy.
removed cover inspected belt - perfect condition no signs of wear and truck has 140k miles on it now
Removed board cover plate - required special 5 point security bit not a torx - Everything looked to be fine no signs of wear or burn marks
Tested fuses I believe it was L78 and main fuse on battery post both good, tested for power at cable end where connects to Rack and had 12.4v power
Went ahead and ordered part# 68256617AH from dealer est 2 weeks, a used one wasn't much less will report back if this is a good part #.
Also submitted report to NHTSA about steering failure while driving as recommended by dealer.

Did you get the rack installed? Any issues?

My 2013 eps rack is currently dying. It makes a loud whining/grinding sound when turning, and appears to be leaking. It looks like the rubber boots have been torn for awhile, and I probably got some snow and water into it this winter.

The local dealership says the part is "discontinued", is a 2013 only part, and completely unavailable. They said that no other year would fit.
They suggested I buy another truck, and that they'd give me a great deal! :happy175:

Anyway, I was able to determine via Tasca Parts and Chrysler of McKinney's online parts stores that the newest version of this rack/pinion is pn# 68628858AA, and "should" fit all 1500 trucks from 2013, up to 18, including Ram Classics up to 2024, made in Warren, MI, with the first vin digit of 1.

I ordered one from MoparParts Giant, and it's currently in-route via FedEx.

So, anyone used AlphaOBD to program the vin into an EPS?

I noticed that it now has the option to do so, under Ram1500 ∆ 2013+ Power net ∆ Steering ∆ Reset Vin Values?

I got the rack installed just fine, everything went smooth, I did notice some minor difference's like the bushings were a little different but everything bolted up just fine. I do still have a power steering message on my dash but everything works good. I do have AlphaOBD too so maybe ill check that later and see if I can reset it. I haven't really been driving it because I had to order new wheel hubs, I do not recommend Mevotech TTX hubs have had them fail twice in a few months. Went with SKF on the new ones.

I'm glad to hear it works.

Let me know if AlphaOBD works for programming the VIN. I'm hoping to avoid the Dealership.

My new rack is supposed to arrive tomorrow, so I'll probably try and get it installed Friday.

I got my old one out, and disassembled it to see what failed. The boot was ripped, and it clearly has some corrosion inside the r/h side from water intrusion. The ballnut carrier bearings were toast and the motors rotor bearings were also shot.

I got my new steering gear installed this morning.

I can confirm that part# 68628858AA, fit into my 2013 with no issues whatsoever. (So far, about a half dozen miles on it).

No codes, no errors.

No programming seems to be required, though I may go play with AlphaOBD anyway, just to see if there are any internal errors that just aren't setting a code.

It steers smooth and quiet again.

Edit to add:

It had the following error:
Screenshot_20240329-074321.png

I did the left/right lock to lock thing 3 times to relearn the steering angle sensor, and the error went away. So far so good.

I've read both ways too. Being uncertain, I did it both ways, then cleared the code and drove it around the block a few times.

The 2nd time I did it with the engine started, left all the way first, then right, repeat two more times then shut off the engine. Then I cleared the code, and it hasn't come back on.

This may or may not apply, but I may have just been lucky and not needed to program. This could have nothing whatsoever to do with the lock to lock stearing angle sensor.

I found this video of a dealer using a Witech2 system to resolve C2219-00, after and electric power brake replacment. He had to use the Witech dealer system to do a "proxi alignment".

Starting at the 4 minute mark.

If this is the case, you will have to have a dealer do this for you.

I don’t know what did it exactly but I removed my tune back to stock ecu, put the truck on jacks, removed the tie rods so they weren’t connected, used alfaobd in the bcm to reset ECU then did the lock to lock with the truck running, cleared codes, cycled key and the power steering light is gone now

Anyone have a lead on this?
I have verified the fuses are good, but my PS is out. I really can't drive the truck.

None of the parts houses have any in stock and have no date for availability. Napa, Car quest, O'Reilly's, Autozone and Advance were all the same.

One dealership said $2700 and six months. Another said $2500 and they would only sell if they installed it, $4200 plus tax. Plus 2-3 months for the part.

Rockauto, Partsgeek are all completely out online.

Help?

I commented to Ken's experience on my other thread.

Glad it worked out for Ken. For my 2013, my Mopar part number is r8573449aa. I don't know if that was what Ken's dealer told him too. There were a couple of Rack and Pinions for that year from my understanding. Ken reference part number 68628858AA and said he found on the Tasca site that this part is the last replacement and should fit 2013-2018. I don't see where part number 68628858AA can replace part r8573449aa. I am glad Ken got his to work great but don't know if he has the same part to be replaced and I don't know that even if I purchased 68628858AA if my problem would go away. I may need to buy Ken's part but trying to communicate my symptoms to see if anyone else had the same problem or idea to fix other than replacing the Rack again. Thank you!

Your "original" rack (r8573449aa) is not your original rack. The r at the beginning of your part# means Remanufactured. Your "dealer" should have known this.

Someone has replaced it before. Rams don't come off the assembly line with rebuilt steering racks.

I get it though. You don't want to risk $3k. You want to know ahead of time that it's a sure thing.

So did i. But, since that wasn't possible, I took the risk.

According to MoparPartsOnline, your original rack was 5154751AE, which has been superceded by updated parts, many, many times since 2013.

There is a long, long chain of this pn# replaced another, replaces another, replaced another, so on.

I'm not sure why those sites now show it as not working with a 2013, because they did back in March 2024.

Ok, here... Look at the supercedes part#s.

See, your original rack part# (not the reman#) is there. I highlighted it for you Screenshot_20250907-074602.Chrome.png

Also, the "What This Fits":

And here is the link to where I found this info:

Further, from the same site:

See. Your dealer sucks, just like Rairdon Dodge in Bellingham, WA. We gotta figure **** out on our own, because if i relied on those extra chromosomal twits, our trucks would be in a cube at a landfill.

I understand your caution with forking out more money, especially after your experience to date.

Dorman products are occasionally useful, but not always. OEM for certain items is beneficial or even necessary in some instances.

We're fortunate with 4th gen trucks that parts are often compatible over many years, even when the manufacturer might claim otherwise. That's where online forums such as Ram Forum shine and allow us to share the knowledge and experience from many owners.

Consider that Ken has the same year of truck, has already researched this and more importantly, has successfully solved this dilemma with his truck.

There are many talented and knowledgeable members on this site, and I would consider Ken to easily be in the top percentile.

I would have been sold after his first few posts, and now he has invested the time to more precisely identify your p/n concerns.

Thanks, Ken. As usual, you go above and beyond.

Thank you Ken, making more sense. My dealer gave me a remanufactured model number to order from but not the original Mopar number without the R. I don't know my original part number. Is there a way I look it up with my VIN?

Also sorry to ask again but what is that website where you posted that the 2013 part would fit. I see "Mopar" in the upper left hand corner. I think you said it before it was a Mopar website. By the way, you have a 2013 - what was your original Rack part number ? I could be on to something

Yes Ken is awesome and I am majorly impressed that it worked out for him. Please keep in mind that even in 2013 RAM has various Rack and Pinions Model numbers. It is not a guarentee of what worked for Ken will work for me. Other than say a rack worked for a guy online, I am trying to see where my numbers match with Kens numbers or a any number so I can present. Unfortunately I don't have my original part number yet, just the "R" number that the dealer gave me and don't even know if they got that right honestly now.

I posted your original part# in post 93 above. 2nd line in the 5th paragraph.

I also posted a link to the site, in post 94, above.

It probably takes you less time to read it than it took me to type it.

Here it is again
