My friend has a 1998 Ram 1500 base model with a 5.2L (318). It drove well for three days. Then it would not start. Sprayed starting fluid down the throttle body and it ran only when fluid shot in it. This was done by another person and he had told my friend it was the fuel pump. I got to it and did the same thing. I got it to run but it would not stay running at idle until after about 5 minutes. Then it started fine and ran fine with no problem. What caused it? Will it occur again? Is this the fuel pump going bad? Not enough pressure?

You'll have more luck posting this in the proper section of the forum.
Has anyone checked the idle air control motor (IAC)?

If you can feather the throttle and it stays running you have a failed IAC.

You should get a gauge and check the fuel pressure at the rail to make sure the pump it doing its job.
