I think I finally made the decision on which cover to go with for my new Ram. I like the Bakflip MX4. I have a few follow up questions.

Is there anyone here that can comment on it one way or the other?

Is there a better option out there that other members prefer?

Is it available from a site sponsor or dealer for a good price?

Thanks in advance!

I've installed and repaired just about every leading manufacturers cover. The mx4 is my favorite out of them all. Gives you full access to your bed while still giving you a water tight seal. Easy to remove if you do need to haul something large and don't want it to stand up at the back glass. No more opening and closing the last fold every time you need to open the tailgate. And lastly you get a great matte black look. I used to recommend the G2 and VP or the undercover flex. Whatever your choice is get a tailgate seal to go with it. I know access makes one. Keeps the last bit of water from coming in around the tailgate as well as dust. I live in the country and the bed of a truck with a cover on gets extremely dusty after a while without one.

my boss has a backflip. dont know the model but he hates it. poor water seal for the price and you have to open the tailgate to close the cover and then close the tailgate last. so you cant just open the first one to get something out and then close it. tailgate has to open BEFORE you close the cover.

might not b an issue on the new ones. his is 2 year old.

I've been researching this cover, so I don't actually have one yet. But have gone to a local shop where they have one on display. I like it a lot, and the local shop has not had any complaints about them.

My key points that have made up my decision to buy the mx4:
1. Can open and close tailgate without lifting end of cover
2. Flips up against rear window for full use of bed.
3. Strong enough to sit on
4. Available for bed with Rambox

I haven't found the best price yet, but I've been told to shop around because prices vary considerably.

Yeah I had called bak when I was first looking their covers and they said the only difference between the mx4 and the previous model was the ability to open and close the tailgate without moving the cover. Must have been something a lot of people complained about to make a new model for just one feature.

Just installed an MX4 on my 1500. So far so good... What sold me was being able to close the tailgate or cover in any order. Also you can have full access to the bed if you flip it up to the cab (the negative is you block the rear window) - but I didnt want to take up space with a canister needed for the roll up style covers. Good overall quality. Easy installation.

I've had the F1 for 3 years now. I like it, but with my new truck, I'm going to try the Revolver X2. I like how it does not require drain tubes, it doesn't require a bolt and rubber washer inserted from the top to secure it to the bed, and I think it'll be easier to just roll vs fold. Enjoy it!

Great info!

Follow up questions.

Is everyone using the water drainage system?

I live in WNY and winters are pretty brutal up here. I have no doubt that the hoses will freeze. Will freezing damage anything? From what I heard when I called Bak they said the water is so minimal that it wouldn't makes difference? But, that's coming from a guy in central Florida!

I never thought of tailgate seals. Ideas on makes and brands?

its not like the drain hoses are going to be filled with water. if whatever residual water sitting in them happened to freeze it wouldnt make a difference.

Where are we letting these hoses drain to? Are they just put through those plastic/rubber things in the bed?

That's an awesome idea, but I think you would need to put an inline filter on it for any debris that might make it in. I've heard blinker fluid needs to be pure to work correctly. :naughty:

We put the MX4 on our Rebel, I have the Retrax on our 2500 and
we like the Retrax but I really like all the bed of the truck being
usable with the MX4.

No leaks and we put a tailgate gasket on and our bed is pretty clean
with us living on gravel roads.

Our roads are so bad here because of lazy maintenance people that most of the
time we have to trailer the Harley out to ride it.

were are you? im in Michigan. the county keeps the dirt roads smother than the paved ones. we also have some of the hightes weight limits on trucks so they destroy our roads

A truck weighing 164,000 pounds can freely operate in Michigan only if it features 11 separate axles, each carrying 13,000 pounds. Under federal rules, trucks that weigh 80,000 pounds can carry 17,000 pounds each on four axles and 12,000 pounds on a steering
