Truck: 16 Ram sport CC 60000km 4 corner air

Tires/rims: factory 20" sport rims with 305/55/20 Amp A/T Pro tires (BFG knockoffs)

Issue: vibration at speed (80-100km). Vibration increased with speed. Happening for a couple weeks.

So had a local tire shop rebalance the rears to start with. Vibration came out of no where so was thinking wheel bearing or cv joint bit thought I'd start with the simple things 1st. Anyway, tire shop road force balanced tires and informed me BOTH rear rims are bent and 1 tire is wearing unevenly . WTF. tires only have 20000km on them. Truck is pavement queen and has 0 crub rash (I've never hit anything). Was told pot holes could bend rims? While I dont doubt that I think I'd remember hitting a hole big enough to do damage!

Thoughts on this???

I've seen wheels cracked from pot holes and from bump stops in parking lots . Big pot holes can destroy wheels if they were forged this wouldn't happen but the cost isn't there

If I were you I would get a 2nd opinion. Early last year I hit something in the road and had a blowout and bent the rim at the same time badly. I bought a used rim off of eBay and had it checked for straightness before getting a new tire and the installer checked it and said it was straight. It had a slight vibe after that so I took it somewhere else to get it rebalanced and that guy said the rim was bent. He rebalanced it and it was ten times worse than it was before I let him touch it. After taking a trip and getting my teeth shaken out I went to a Walmart where I was staying and had it balanced again. Smooth as glass this time. Honestly I think the ability to properly balance a tire must be a dying art and that was a Firestone that gave me a ****** balance. Also these bigger, taller and heavier tires are much harder to balance than a 15" incher on a steel wheel.

I agree I had an offroad shop spin the tires on the rim to balance them easier

The larger your rim the smaller the tire sidewall. If you hit a deep pot hole or one with straight sides the more chance of bending a wheel. The sidewall cushions the impact that's why I prefer the 17" wheel. My old boss put large wheels on his wife's car and she within a short time ruined 3 of them on pot holes.

I am going to get a second opion at a tire shop that also does alignments (1st one doesn't).

I'm not saying a pot hole couldn't damage a rim, but I think I would remember hitting one that could cause a bent rim (or 2 in my case). And if my 2 back rims are bent then theoretically my 2 fronts should be also.

Did you let your wife drive the truck.......I've found mysterious things happen when I get into the truck after my wife has sneaked a drive in it.

i in the same boat. i have a 14 sport with the stock 20x9 wheels with 35x12.5 tires. i have a vibration that comes and goes. cant tie it to anything particular (certain speed, rpm, section of road etc). thinking of going to a local shop to get road force balanced and an alignment. we dont have an "off road" shop aroind that specializes in these bigger tires (and lifts) so its a risk, just hoping they know what they are doing.

Lol, I was told the same thing a few months ago with my stock 20x9 sport rims.. 3 out of 4 rims bent... Same issue, vibration around 70mph on up after a tire rotation at the dealer. Three shops later, I learned my rims were counter balanced from the previous shops. The 3rd shop removed all the weights, performed a lug centric balance, and now she’s smooth as silk all the way through till the governor kicks in.

Thats similar to me except my vibration kind of start out of no where. My tires only have 20km on the and have been rotated once (each oil change).

Im not sold on the bent rim theory yet. As for the uneven wear; possibly. Truck has never hit anything, rarely tows anything and rarely sees gravel roads. But tires are Chinese brand so they could be suspect.

Hopefully the next place can fix this issue.

Mine occurred with a new set of tires too, around the same mileage as yours, immediately after an oil change / tire rotation. The fact yours vibrate at random speeds is even more odd. If it were mine I’d take it to another shop, make sure they strip the old weights off, and perform a lug centric or road force balance. It’s what I had to do with mine and fortunately the last shop figured it out.

The vibration is more noticeable at highway speed. Feel it through the pedal and seat. Steering wheel doesnt move (which is why I'm thinking rear of truck)

I would think the same thing, but honestly I'm not a pro at diagnosing this.

One of the stops I made was a custom wheel shop. They are the ones who started pitching the idea of how "easy" it was to bend rims. Everything came across as a terrible sales pitch and I left. I was determined to try balancing one last time before buying new rims. My truck never goes off road, and I haven't hit crazy potholes. I would have been more convinced if I was told I had one bent rim, but three bent rims all of a sudden, out of nowhere? My truck was smooth as silk before my tire rotation. That didn't make sense to me at all. Don't get me wrong, I trust my dealer, but I already had one bad experience with an alignment. I had to go somewhere else and the dealer refunded me. So since the dealer only rotated my tires, I wasn't going to hold them liable for weird vibrations, which is why I dropped money at multiple shops until the balance was corrected.

I suspect bad tire not rim. Happened to my father in law with him going with the chinese brand. Never had a problem with my 35x11.5 Toyo ATII haha each tire had about .75oz to 1.5oz of weights on them Hahah but when I went with Hercules TG MAX in 305/70 the wheels had twice to almost three times the amount of weights on them. Maybe you lost one or two of the "weight" and that is causing the vibration or broke a belt in the tire?

So after taking truck to another tire shop the vibration is 90% better. All they did was rebalance the tires (all 4 this time) and its better. They never mentioned anything about bent rims or misalignment. They also couldn't feel the vibration I was complaining about and just said it was the tires themselves. No one would probably feel what I was concerened about since they've never driven the truck before but i know there was a change. So for right now I'll monitor things but I do believe it's more then likely the tires wearing some.
