Since my purchase of a new 2019 Ram 3500 High Output Cummins 6.7 I have yielded to the Dealership's Service Dept's advise that Shell Rotella 10w30 be used in the engine. Yet, as from my first oil change I have heard that in very warm/ hot climates 15w40 is better. Such as Valvoline Blue. What can some of you folk tell me?

They specifically say DO NOT USE 15W40 in the '19+ Cummins with hydraulic lifters. I am running 5W40 synthetic, whether Rotella T6, Delo, or Delvac, whatever is on sale/rebate. I am running Fleetguard Stratapore filters, but Donaldson Blue are also excellent.

That makes sense regarding the hydraulic lifters, which were new to the 6.7 beginning in 2019. Thank you. That eases my mind.

It is so hard to get used to 10w30 in a Cummins, are any of you guys running 5w40 year around? I'm in hot Florida, so I was going to ditch the 10w30

10w30 is not easy to find in a diesel rated oil. I'm running Rotella 10w30 now.

I remember the Ecodiesel originally came with 10w30 oil, and it contributed to bearing failure, so they switched to 5w40.

That's what my dealership is using in my oil changes for the '19 6.7 high output

I have a 6.4 hemi now, but always had cummins before this one. I always used Rotella 5w-40, or every now and again valvoline premium blue 5w-40 when I could find it. Both are great oils.

Just did my first oil change not too long ago. 5w40 Rotella will be used year round on mine in Texas/New Mexico with a Mopar filter. I would not use 15w40 because of the hydraulic lifters. 10w30 is impossible to find around where I live.

Using 5w40 year round will not be an issue. There is a chart somewhere that shows what oil to use per temperature and 5w40 goes across all temperature ranges.

What got me off track on oils for this never 6.7 high output was that the Service Writer at the dealership never told me the reason why 10w30 was required. If he had just told me it was because of the new hydraulic lifters I'd have understood. Several here have now mentioned the lifters and I'm grateful. The Dealership does my oil changes but someday I hope to do my own because it would be such fun pouring 3 gallons of oil into this beast.

My '19 has only 8,300 miles on it and I've had it about a year and 8 months. She purrs like a kitten.

I just learned about this change. Why don’t they tell us regular consumers this stuff?? My 2019 3500 owners manual says 15w40 so that’s what I used. There was apparently a TSB specifying 10w30 now. I live hot Texas, so now I don’t know what to put in . My 6.7 only had 43k miles on it so still under drive train warranty.

Yeah. On my very 1st oil change the S.A. told me they have to use a certain weight, and synthetic--for those new lifters. I, too, living here in broiling SW Arizona thought that 15w40 would be best, but they said no.

So, you have the newer Cummins, and are OK not using the 10w30? Waht about the valve lifters? The Dealership should have a 10w30 in stock.

That's odd, my 2019 manual(Diesel Supplement)did not even mention 15W40, and the fill cap said 10W30.

Holy moly! You're in Ajo. No one knows where Ajo is. We were looking at the Coyote Howls RV park in Why online for a full-time RV site, trying to decide if it's worth being that remote from shopping and doctors. Are you full-time RVing it there?

Below is a photo of my 2022 oil cap, it list what weights of oil can be used in the 6.7L CTD... I run 5w40 synthetic year round and have talked to many hot shot trucks owners who also use 5w40 year round, many have the HO engines so you will be okay using 5w40 synthetic in TX, just don't try to skimp by using some cheap no name brand of synthetic oil.....

:) It's good that no one knows where it is. After the Phelps Dodge mine closed back in the 70s, houses here sold for $5,000. Now, they are $130,000. I bought mine in 2005 for less that I paid for my 2019 3500 dually--and have lived here since 2009. I love it! Clear skies, PLENTY of water, and so quiet I go to sleep to the sound of hooting Great Horn Owls. ;) But this summer has been brutal. The weather phenomena known as El Nino has caused a gigantic high pressure "heat dome" to be parked over the SW and is preventing the cooling monsoonal flow, w/ those magnificent thunder storms. Any storms that begin to brew just get shut down. :( But if I were you, I'd pick a place like Prescott--if you want to full time RV, year round. It's 20-30 degrees cooler there--but quite chilly in winter. But lots of folk love to RV winter here in Ajo. Best Park is just across the street from Olsen's IGA. Ajo is "where summer spends winter."

We have the very best IGA store here, Olsen's--with an Ace Hardware inside it. The meat department is 2nd to none. The Desert Senita Health Care Center is excellent, including dental. But for specialties, one needs to drive up to Buckeye, or just a few miles east, into Goodyear. It's not that bad if one plans it right, to do shopping while there. There is only 1 stop light between here and anywhere in Phoenix--in Gila Bend (40 miles north of Ajo). Gila Bend and north is a 4 lane divided highway. 65mph, but Highway Patrol will let you do 75.

So, here in SW AZ, where it gets really toasty in summer--I should be using the 10w30. My Dealership uses the Shell Rotella--which is a synthetic, or a synthetic blend

Ive been using 5-40 via dealer (coupon) for the first few oil changes. but have read/vids on some hotshot guys liking 10-30 and liking how the motor feels when using it. (take it for what you will) . and I will try 10-30 on my next oil change soon, but I do a lot of miles so will switch back to 5-40 closer to winter as I live in Montana and it gets cold here. haha.

My self I don't believe in using a syn blended oil except in a gas engine... I run 5w40 in my 2022 ( my dealer approved 5w40 oil is Rotella T6, its also their recommend oil for the 6.7)... I ran 5w40 in my 06 CTD during the hot & humid summers in the Midwest and cold subzero winters...

If your dealer uses 10w30 its most likely a blended oil, up to 2018 you could run dino oil in a 6.7 CTD and the engine would it last a long, long time, being Cummins has changed over to roller lifters in 2019+ engines I will be sure to only use full synthetic oil as I like the extra protection of synthetic oil for the roller lifters & cam, my next oil change latter this month will be once more with 5w40 with a Donaldson DLB 7349 oil filter...
