Well this was supposed to be a positive post. I just picked up my 2014 1500 Sport yesterday, took a whole 12 hours to get a CEL.

Got home from work and when I shifted into park the light came on. I ran the codes this morning and got P0463 (fuel level sensor circuit high input) and U0140 (Lost comms with BCM). Throughout today the fuel gauge has been all over and after I put $20 in it, it dropped to zero with alarms and came back up a minute later. Its done that 3 times today with a fuel sensor fail annunciation. Also I got a "service shifter" annunciation on the dash but only once and no code. I'm 99% sure it was there before and the dealer cleared all this before I bought it. Oh it also indicates the right taillight is out when its actually the third that isn't working. That was agreed to be replaced but seems odd that it indicates the wrong one. I'm taking it back to the dealer tomorrow.

So I guess what I'm asking is if I just purchased a lemon and how screwed I am?

Damn that sucks for sure. I doubt it’s a lemon and should be under some warranty. Hopefully the dealer where you purchased it is on the level and takes care of it.

Check local laws, most states have something like a 48-72 ‘buyers regret’ clause where you can return it. Definitely sounds like the electrical and/or computer is toast. Did you check Carfax (even though their not 100% reliable.) I wonder if it is a famous flood truck? That would make more sense. I would threaten to return it and see where that gets you.

I do have the Carfax. 61k miles, one owner, registered in Birmingham, only a few regular maintenance service records. Unfortunately Mississippi has no buyer remorse laws and lemon laws only apply to new or less than 1 yr old. The only leverage I'm thinking I might have is the code history. I've heard that a Ram dealer can pull the previous codes and find out when they were cleared and if that's the case, and they cleared everything just to sell it and didn't disclose the problems, I maybe can do something with that.

I'm sorry to hear about your challenge.

This truck has some electrical issues, not covered by the powertrain warranty, so you're on your own here.

It is possible that the previous owner got rid of this truck due to these electrical issues which aren't covered by the warranty after 36k miles.

I would take day off from work, take that truck back to dealership and do everything possible to return it back to them. You can probably go to another mechanic and ask if it's possible to get official history of the codes, so you can use that as leverage that they mislead you and didn't disclose obvious major issues of this truck before selling it to you. It could be illegal to knowingly cover up issues with the truck in order to mislead the buyer... You may want to check with your lawyer. In fact, hopefully you do know a lawyer who can advise you on how to speak with dealer about this, the dealer can just brush you off too... Not sure if you got any strength in this case or not. Maybe you can try to buy another truck from that dealer and return this one worst case.

Please get rid of this truck asap, huge huge red flags. You could sink so much money into these issues, and maybe previous owner already tried to fix them but it may be too costly or challenging. So cut your losses while you're not too deep yet. You don't want this truck without warranty and that's having various electrical issues.

I'm sorry to tell you this, hope for the best, and good luck. Just my own opinion

Fairly dramatic response, highly negative too.

OP, the tail light out message is how the truck notifies you there is a bulb out in the rear, all our trucks do that.

Re-seat all the fuses in the underhood junction box. For some reason, the fuses are not fully seated from the factory. Many of us have fixed intermittent issues by making sure the fuses are fully seated.

It is possible the fuel sensor or it's wiring is faulty, it happens, fix it and move on. Buying used out of warranty vehicles is always a risk.

I hope the fix is simple and inexpensive and the truck provides you years of trouble-free service.

I agree with the above, hopefully the dealer you bought from will make this right without too much hassle.

For troubleshooting, I also suggest you check the battery is holding voltage and that the alternator is charging properly. Low voltage can really screw with the ecm and the complicated electrical system in these trucks. Good luck!!

Great troubleshooting advice above, but since you just bought the truck and it's been in your possession 1/2 day, I recommend you don't touch anything yet, and just take it back to have the dealer's mechanic look it over. I hope all works out for you! Keep us posted and welcome to the forum! :welcome:

Could go back to dealer buy an extended warranty and then in a couple of days go back and have the issues fixed.

He can't buy good Chrysler extended warranty anymore, only a crappy after market warranty which won't cover anything and claim it's a "pre existing condition". So it'll be worthless. If anything, save that money towards the repair.

I'd first spend my energy on trying to return that truck, and if that fails, then yes try to repair it. Why start this battle trying to repair the truck that you just bought... If it's an easy fix, sure good, but what if he'll end up chasing these electrical issues for a while and paying from his own pocket?

Assuming it's an average used car dealer, I'll be surprised they'll try to help with anything after the sale. So it's always best to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Worth trying first though.

I think it could be a very bad situation, so my post isn't overly dramatic nor too negative. In my opinion, you guys are being too optimistic and hopeful and not telling the OP like it is, that he could get stuck chasing electrical problems on his new truck and paying for it from his own pocket.

Just trying to help the OP, not start the drama.

In WI, most used cars come with a 3000 mile/3 month warranty. Did your deal come with anything like that?

Welcome aboard....sucks this is your intro to the brand.

I hate hearing about newer trucks having gremlin issues. That's the only bad thing about vehicles getting more expensive and technologically advanced. Just more stuff that can go wrong.

Good luck getting the situation figured out and Keep your head up.

The used dealer we get most of our cars from offer something similar. Check with the dealer first, be nice, but firm. Show them the issues before you start repairing them.

I would be a little upset because if you (or any buyer) knew of these things it could have given you some bargaining room. Still, if you like the truck try to get the dealer to pay to get it fixed. Fuel sensors can fail, might even be a pinched wire. The bulb ..well, that's nothing. Losing communication to the BCM kinda makes me wonder though. Did this thing go through a flood?

It sounds like a BCM or tipm module problem. It's probably cheaper than an extended warranty to fix. Last BCM I swapped was around 600 CAD if I remember correctly including programming at the dealer. Hopefully the selling dealer will make it right. If not I'd get your local ram dealer to plug it in and test it. Not something most people can diy due to the programming. Hopefully the ramcares rep on this site can help make sure whatever dealer you take it too treats you right.

Thanks for all the input guys. Took it by the dealer today and they said it looks like a malfunction in the pump or sending unit. Surprisingly they said they'd take care of it and ordered a whole pump assembly to be put in next week. Really good integrity on their part, I was impressed. They're a big Chevrolet but they just got a ram contract. But also the BCM code was gone. I've heard it's common for that one to pop up randomly and go away. Nothing in the cabin is malfunctioning though
