No, it is not open. The area where the opening should be is plastic that can be trimmed out which would then allow you to add the filter. You can also purchase the "door" as mentioned above. Use the search feature in the forum. There are several posts with more details.

'16 were hit and miss, if I remember correctly the early production ones didn't have filters, some had just the door but no filter.

My 2016 ram 2500 has a door/slot for filter...at 45,000 miles I thought- get I’ll replace that filter....bought one and went to replace and there wasn’t one in there to begin with

It's not trim level dependent. My lone star has one. It is year, and for one year (2016 I believe) it is partial year if memory serves me (early production run that year did not have them, late production run did).

I still find it a cheap move the FCA did not install a CAF in a few model years !
Did the mod on my 2015 about 3 years ago and man has that thing catch's a bunch of crap :O

My 2016 3500 Big Horn came with the door but no filter installed. Just have been an upgrade for that year.LOL

When I worked at a Dealer as a Mechanic, It was a common practice to rob small parts from a new vehicle out in the parking area and not tell anyone, they never knew until the vehicle sold and prepped, then a new part was installed and charged to warranty. Even on Used !!!

got the door on ebay got a filter did mine 2010 replace ever year ! just replace filter was really durty not even one year in there very cheep of dodge not doing on all trucks right ! my first mod !
