On average, how much fluid does it lose when doing a valve body and torque converter, for those of you that have done it? I can get royal purple ATF4 for about the same price as valvoline syn on the shelf at oreillys, but its not near work so I need to know how much to bring with me.

I figure an average pan service is around 7 quarts on most dodge trannys, another for VB, and about 3 in the converter, plus the extra 2 for the deeper pan. Sound about right?

I don't exactly remember how much fell out, but you would probably be close to what the FSM calls 'O-haul' vs a service fill. The overhaul fill is listed as 29-33 pints (about 3.5 to a little over 4 gallons).

I would grab 12-13 qts. It will likely only take 12, but I would rather have the extra qt to be on the safe side.

Alright sounds good, I already priced 14 qts, saved even more by getting my oil and filter since my next oil change is 300 miles away. getting the ATF for 8.23/qt and the oil for 7.34/qt plus a $7 filter and tax.

it took a lot with mine, dropping the pan to replace the filters and verter was like 16qrts. the verter itself held 6-8qrts. put in 12, let it run and then add some until it's full, just don't under full it or your temps well raise real quick and don't over fill it or the truck won't act right. they are very picky with trans fluid.

also make sure you get the mopar trans fluid or equivalent atf+4 (valvolene or Mobil 1

Damn, may need to add a few extra quarts to the list.

Dont let mopar fool you with the mopar brand ATF+4, it's made by valvoline. I'm using royal purple max ATF because we have a distribution hub here in town and if you buy direct from them it's usually the same price if not cheaper than valvoline or mobil 1.

Yep +4 and as i recall no more than 12 or so, so get 13 quarts to be safe like Matt says and wear a Beater T-Shirt when you do the job.

ok we seem to have some conflicting opinions here on capacity, one says 16 quarts, one says 12-13...

Yes what I am using is a multispec fluid, and ATF+4 is one of those specs. I've run it in my jeep for years.

And I dont think my service manager would be too happy about me walking around in a wife beater in his shop. Even if its my day off.
