Can I use a 2.5" in/out muffler to replace the stock one?

I have a 2.5" in/out glasspack laying around that I bought for another vehicle somewhere along the way... I just picked up my 2004 Ram 1500 Hemi, and it's pretty rough. The single-exhaust is broken after the Y-pipe, and the mid-pipe/muffler are hanging by a couple chains. Needless to say, it won't take much to improve this setup. What's the bare minimum I can do? I was thinking: replace the mid-pipe (3" diameter I think) then a reducer into the 2.5" glass pack, then a turndown. It's mainly a work truck - but i still think it would be an improvement...since it cant get much worse.

Better off keeping a 3” instead of reducing it. Better flow. And if possible make sure the turn down is as far back as possible so you don’t get exhaust gases recirculating under the cab.

Those are factory hanger locations. that's just inside my passenger rear wheel well looking forward, its a super 44 single in into a dual out. That sucker sounds mean with my headers and HO cams. magna flo cats.

I like that setup. I just got a 2005 Dodge Ram 5.7 (haven’t picked it up yet) but she has headers and a single 3” piping with a boat rotting out on it. I was looking at what to do with it. I was thinking of glasspacks, but I may run the cherry bomb extreme single 3” with a 8” tip out the rear. I may go this route still, however that dual turn down looks tempting as well.

I like the look, or lack thereof of hidden turndowns. I first had a single 10-series Flowmaster dumped before the axle, sounded good. Then I went true duals with an X-pipe dumped before the axle, but after a few months of not being able to hear anything, I dumped them over the axle. It’s still loud inside because I don’t have cats, but tolerable.
