You have to fix the rust first.
Yes. I been that route. Had the rust “taken care of” and then Bedliner and then painted. Well the metal gets quite thin from being sanded down and it doesn’t take long for the bubbles to return, pop and rust come through.

To do it right you have to cut the rusted sections out and replace them with new ones.
My 2008 started to get a little bubble action going on the left rear fender, I cut it out and welded in new sections and then re painted the whole bed side so that it would match up.

Yeah that’s where I eventually ended up. It all started with me noticing 2 small little bubbles. I took it to a body shop the guy there had a look. He explained to me that eventually I would have to get it cut out and new piece welded back in. He told me that he could sand it down add Bedliner and paint to match. I was told it would last a couple years but eventually it would need to be cut out and new metal added.
Anyways long story short it only lasted about 3 month till it was bubbling again. Problem is when most people see bubbles they think “oh it’s just a little bubble” it’s way more than that though. Bubbles are probably the worst though since it means it’s rotting from the inside out.
Within the 3 month I went from having 2 little bubbles to my whole rear drivers side door filled with them. It was explained to me that when they sand down the metal becomes really thin and causes some pinholes which in turn bring out more bubbles. So anyways few month later and I took the truck back on and had my whole rocker cut out and replaced and haven’t had a problem since. Which I should have just done that to begin with

I would go trade it off even at a loss, a year from now that truck will be rusted clear out.

The decision I am facing at the moment is either to try to sell or trade NOW or to fix the rust first and then try to move it. I have a written estimate to replace the rockers and back cab corners at $1800. Most trucks similar to mine are ranging from $20k to $22k.

I have never attempted to privately sell a vehicle worth this much.. so, do you guys know if that is even possible? Do people buy $20k trucks from a private seller? Something tells me that if someone has that much money, then they probably would prefer going to a dealer. Which means I'm going to get ***** when I go to a dealer and they say $17k or something ridiculous.

Yes. But that doesn’t mean it’s not fixable and he has to sell it cuz “that truck will be rotted clear out”
You can definitely address and correct rust issues. Now if it’s everywhere then different story.

I would have the lower body line linexed or similar. Clean the underneath up the best you can with a wire wheel, spray bomb it with rattle can bed liner and trade it.

Never said its not fixable pretty much anything is to a point, but I bought a new truck because I dont want rust and if it was mine I would dump it.
My 07 had bubbles forming above the rear tires and was starting to break through and I did not want to dump money in it so that was one reason I got rid of it.

You do rockers and cab corners arer the bed sides next ? What about the front fenders thats what would scare me about keeping it.

Just saying for me I would sell it, even at a loss.

Yeah i get that and I get that it’s a Canadian truck but Ohio gets its share of nasty winters too. Like I said if it’s a little rust then you address it and take proper measure to prevent more rusting and you can have that truck for many more years to come. I think anytime you live somewhere with harsh winters rust is always gonna be a concern.
Sorry I’m not trying to argue with you if that’s what it seems like.

“Salt belt”, “rust belt”, same thing, it’s terrible up here in northern Ohio. Our roads are white long after the snows gone...

I am sorry to hear that you can't get warranty. I never knew this and glad I do know. Really if you come to think of it, it's pretty stupid. It's the same truck. It's like you going to another state to get warranty work.. there is no difference. That does suck.

I am so glad I live in Arizona. I've had trucks for 7 years that when you get under them.. they look new still! I don't know how you guys can even buy cars in those states.

I did see an Ohio car - totally rusted out, all fenders, bumpers and even the license plate! That would tear me up.

Just to add one note on buying a Canadian vehicle in the US - if it was originally a fleet vehicle, the warranty will transfer to the US. I bought a 2015 fleet vehicle a little over a year ago that was originally sold in Canada. I received the remainder of the warranty. The key is that the dealer must go into the system and transfer the warranty. I saved a lot of money buying a Canadian vehicle but made sure that the warranty would transfer before purchasing it.

That looks like it was driven in Quebec or Ontario where every winter the roads, and vehicles, are coated with salt. That looks normal for salt corrosion for a 2013. Worry that salt is throughout. Western Canada vehicles seem to be less rusty. I live in the sub arctic so no salt, but crazy cold and long idling. My last truck was a Chevy and was shipped to Northern California when I traded it in. It was a good truck but the extreme winters will damage the truck, even though it’s really low mileage and clean looking. It spent hours idling at fourty below. All the gaskets and hoses crack.
