Something I have just noticed recently- a distinct tapping noise when the driveline is cold. Can't really isolate it, but definitely audible. When things warm up, it quiets, but still there. Bringing the RPM up stops it. Oil pressure is good, just odd. Sounds like the cam phasers in my old 5.4- wonder if its related to the VVT on that hemi or of its the 8 speed just being noisy?

6600KMS on it. Hopefully nothing serious :(

What oil are you running? Could just be hemi tick.

It does not matter what oil you run, if you have the 5.7 Hemi you will always have a tick. This is the norm.

The rumor is, that Redline and Royal Purple oils can quiet or eliminate the hemi tick? Can anyone confirm this, or recommend one over the other???

Redline fixed mine and many guys here. Mine sounded just as bad as that and now sounds smooth, see the link in my sig.

Thanks Burla! I read your thread and watched video on this, great info. I am probably changing from Mobil 1 to Redline.

Anyone else have thoughts on Redline vs Royal Purple (specifically to quiet the Hemi tick)???

Redline and Motul have some unique properties, both have high Moly that coats the lifters at startup for dry starts, and Royal purple has no moly. Also, R & M are group 5 oil which has 16% to 40% better film strength, which in a sense is like using a thicker oil while still flowing like 5w20. RP is similar to Mobil one in that it is in a sense like a "cleaner" version of conventional oil, they are not real "synthetic". Also, Redline has much more Zinc then most oils, so again that is a proven anti friction additive.

What I don't know is what the additive Synerlec® is and how it effects friction. It is a newer additive and is not proof and time tested in the same way that Zinc, group 5, and molybdenum are. if it was then all oil companies would be using it just like Zinc and Moly. Zinc is in all oils, Moly is in most oils just not Royal Purple (for some unknown reason they took it out).

It is absolutely possible Royal Purple can help lifter noise, but it is likely Redline will quiet that engine. I say that with confidence because it has indeed worked in between 70 and 80% of this forum members that have used it. Read the syn thread if you haven't, plenty of this info and charts in there.

It is 11.49 a qrt shipped free from Amazom, make sure you get blue label, that is an amazing price if you consider what it costs to ship a case of oil, a case is 12 but you can buy 8 if you want. Check out the syn thread, I did a Used Oil Analysis on redline oil after a year of use and the additive package was holding strong. Use dealer locator to find locally, I am sure there are many in so cal. Just as important to get a synthetic oil filter, I use Royal Purple myself and have been in testing for a while. It will take 8 months before I know if they will last a year. I have tested paper filters many times, they are chit and have never held up even on short oil change intervals. Post your experience either good or bad in oil thread. Add to the body of knowledge here for everyone.

It takes around 500 miles usually before the moly seeps in and quiets, so keep that in mind. Google "moly basics" and read the link that comes up from bobistheoilguy. Moly will coat your metal parts and protect them from dry starts.

Odd. Sounds like a knocking or tapping- I always thought the hemi tick sounded like injectors. Learn something new :)

Edit: Just found this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQRBmBlZQpY

And this is EXACTLY what it sounds like. So, I guess it's an MBRP system to "fix" the tick :flamingdevil:

Interesting thing is your under warranty so it might be a good idea to fight the dealer. Sometimes I am not sure if I did the right thing using Redline. If it is masking a bigger problem then I am screwed because I am almost out of warranty. I know I had some wear numbers that suggest that hemi tick is a real problem and should not be scuffed at. So have other guys, hemi tick shows up in wear numbers in UOA's.

7 quarts of 5w30 and a RP filter? Does that sound about right?

I would get 8, for some reason my truck takes 8 with oil filter change, can't figure out why. I hope I'm not over filling and there is something off with my dip stick. Better safe then sorry, it wont go to waste.
