Hi everyone , Please see attached .

is the coolant temp at 228 normal ?

Last week while picking my kids up from school my temperate gauge went pass the half mark and was about 3/4 . I took it into the dealership since I have extended warranty and they change the thermostat, And fan clutch clutch .. I got the truck back a week later. Today was my 2nd day driving it and while I was picking up the kids again I was watching the temp gauge . The temperate stayed slightly over the half mark ; it went from 222,224,226,228 . It didn’t pass 228.

I forgot to add the truck was idling for 40 minutes . The car loop line at my child's school is long .

Mine never gets above 205 and I think thats hot. Watch about idling if you have the Hemi. At 82* thats hot. I was sitting at 100* and in traffic when I hit 205. Make sure you have enough coolant. Mine one time got to 210 and that was why.

Definitely check the coolant. A few years back, I had the dealer flush/fill the cooling system on my Jeep while I had it in for inspection. For the next couple of days, the temp gauge would climb to 3/4 or sometimes above and be normal at other times. I thought I might be losing the thermostat until I realized that it only started to overheat when facing uphill.

Turns out that the tech never "burped" the cooling system after refilling it -- I wound up putting in about 3 more quarts of of 50/50, which fixed the problem. I guess the tech that the put on the flush/fill was the FNG that they normally stick on the oil changes and tire rotations. I did complain about it the next time that I was out there for inspection on another vehicle and they were good enough to refund me. Now, however, I check everything I possibly can when any of my vehicles leave their service department. Once bitten, twice shy, as they saying goes.

I thought it was hot also . But wasn’t sure . My concern is if I bring it back to the dealership there going to tell me it’s fine. Especially since they changed the thermostat, fan clutch and they did a radiator flush .

Is there anything else I can recommended to the dealer to check ?

I did a coolant flush about two months ago when I was going on a long road trip . And when they changed the thermostat this week the dealership told me they topped off the coolant . I’m going to double check just to make sure .

That is 100% totally normal temps.

Before I put the 180* thermostat in my truck it would sit around 222 pretty much all the time.

Really ,
that good to know . I believe 228 is on the higher side tho . I’ll watch it for a few days and see . It only happened when I idle for a long period of time , which would be 30 min or more . Any other time It usually sits around 205-215.

Op, I can't tell if you have the hemi or the penastar

If you have the hemi, that's hot, if it's the v6, it's fairly normal from my experience.

My supercharged hemi with an intercooler never gets over 203 even in traffic and 100 outside Temps. Oil runs 210 and trans around 160.

Seems high to me too but these newer RAMs seem to be happy there. The highest I have ever seen mine is about where yours is running 228ish. That is why I changed the thermostat out.

It really is not hard to change out if you want it to cool off a bit. Just takes two bolts and a gallon of coolant and a gallon of distilled water. I didn't even lose a whole gallon popping the thermostat housing off.

I’m going to monitor it for another week . If it does the same thing than I’ll change the thermostat. I’m glad to hear it two bolts . I have mopar coolant at home so , all I would need to buy is the thermostat.

Honestly, I've never seen the gauge climb past the middle on any of my Rams from just idling. They usually sit rock solid around 3/8-ish. That's been true of my last 4 Rams. Before it starts to cool down here I'll have to check to see what the actual coolant temperature is when I'm idling in the hot weather.

Thanks for the info . I live In Fortlauderdale, Florida and it’s extremely hot here . I owned 2 rams so far and the temperature always sit at the 1/2 mark .

Now that I’m aware of the coolant temperature I’m going to monitor the heck out of it this week . If any issues I’m bring it back to the dealership . I do believe 228 is too hot and it would climb pass the half mark . But , knowing the dealership they will say it’s fine .

i live in seabrook tx and my collant might get to 212 but as soon as it does it goes gight back down to 205 my oil is 215 if i get on it real hard it will go to 222 but then right back down to 215/217 (1 time oil got to 228- but it was back to back 105 mph runs just to see how hot it would get)

looks to high in my opinion- if i idle my coolant will be 205 max and oil will be 208 and thats a long idle in 100 degree temps

I still have my stock t stat. Its been on my list of things to do. Mine never has gotten that hot. What was it reading on the needle gauge? My dad said once when he briefly owned my truck before I got it back it got close to 3/4 in between is what he says. It was low on coolant. No leaks just a little low.

I had to run out today and make a couple of quick stops. Pulled up the coolant temp and left it up. I left the truck idling with the A/C running (and my wife sitting inside) while I ran into a store to pick up a few things. Coolant temp when I stopped and got out was 205 -- about 10 minutes later when I got back it was 210. Running to the next stop, temp fluctuated between 210-215 until the fan kicked in, then it went back down to 205.

I idled for about 15 minutes at the last stop and when I came back to the truck it was sitting at 212 -- so I watched it for a bit while continuing to idle and it would basically cycle between 205 and 215, going down when the fan kicked on and slowly climbing after the fan shut off. Watched a couple of those cycles before I pulled out and headed home.

Note that these numbers are from a 6.4L in a 2500. But I've had 3 5.7L 1500s prior to this 2500 and they've behaved similarly to my 2500 -- temp gauge hangs about a needle-width higher than 3/8 when idling, even during our hot, humid summers with the A/C running.

FWIW, today's weather was cloudy, 80 degrees (finally -- was 95 yesterday) and really humid. But I live in South Central Pennsylvania. We get hot and humid summers, too, but I think my definition of "hot" and your definition of "hot" might not be the same. ;)

My gauge has never touched the 3/4 mark. Even at 220 it was just past the middle. I mean I am in AZ too, it was like 111 degrees outside yesterday.

Definately check to see if its full, and check fluids after "servicing" has been performed.

I know of instances where people had oil changes done, and not enough or too much was put in.

I’m in Texas so I know the 100 degrees temps. Mine stays fairly cool with the stock fan. I’ve debated the e fan option. I tend not to mess with it too much as it’s never had any issues.

Mine climbs and stays 212-235 when pulling a TT. I’m going to drop my 180t stat back in and see if that helps.
