Ok guys here goes. After 15 years of wanting the ground shaking power of that Cummins I finally bought one. 2005 3500 6spd 5.9l CTD with 145k miles on it. I LOVE this truck. I was a mechanic for about ten years so I'm familiar with, gasoline engines, the only thing I know about a diesel is they are expensive when they break!

So here's the problem. I loaned my truck to my dad. The ignition switch is kind of henky...you can pull the key out in the accessories position. I warned him of this however he inadvertently left the key on. He is an over the road truck driver and it say while he was on his weekly run. He jumped it and after letting it run for about two hours it was fine for two weeks. I loaned it to him again, you guessed it, he did it again. He was able to jump it and drive it home about an hours drive or so. I got in it a few days later to drive it and it was dead. Like so dead it wouldn't unlock the doors and key fob was useless. I tried jumping it with a jump box...took two to get it to start. Once it was running I pulled the box off and it died. I jumped it again, did the same thing. Third time I tried to jump it I got a solid crank but no start till it drained the jump box. Put two new batteries on it for good measure. No amp gauge no fuel gauge and no oil gauge and check engine light never came on. Ch cakes all the fuses and they were all good. Figured maybe the memory was lost in the computer. So I took it to the dealership to have them re flash it. They said the computer is dead, and they have to replace it...to the tune of $2500!

I guess my real question is, does anybody have a source for a reman/aftermarket computer and does it have to go to the dealership to be put in. They tell me it has to be vin locked and reprogrammed by them. I know I'm going to spend better than a grand but $2500 sounds really high. I will gladly take any thoughts or advice.

My dad had issues with him computer on a 2000 gmc 3500 van. He brought it to a shop. The got a used computer and then to the dealer for a flash. I think the computer was a $300. And then then to gmc for a flash $110. Something like that. I would go to a scrap yard and get one.

A quick internet search brought this up....

Buy one from Cardine, they are the ones that repair PCM/ECM for the dealer and supply the local auto parts store. You give them your VIN and they flash it for something like $35 plus the couple hundred for the unit. Your old ECM can be your core. good luck and don't loan your truck to anyone, including your dad....
