I know this a Ram Forum, but I am thinking there maybe some Jeep owners out there. My daughter is turning 16 and she wants a Wrangler. She needs a ride but we don't want to get her a car, as I feel a Wrangler is higher up and a little more on the safer side.

Here is my issue, she wants a Jeep, more of a Wrangler(I'm not giving her what she wants as a first car, but I want her to be in a small SUV/wrangler size vehicle rather then a car), but I am leaning more to a Jeep Grand Cherokee. What would/have any of you done? What is the safer route, Wrangler or Cherokee for a new driver?

Wrangler, it's memorable and there are plenty of threads on the JL forum about them taking hits and being fine

Plus you might borrow it yourself sometimes

On one hand I would say Cherokee is safer because completely built around being a passenger vehicle, but on the other hand a Wrangler could drive OVER things that the Cherokee could only drive INTO, so if you expect mistakes....the Wrangler might be the better bet :)

My daughter is in college and she also wants a Jeep Wrangler ( her first car)it started out a patriot and she still wants it shall I say take a patriot however the Wrangler is her first choice. I always buy what I want for myself she gets straight A's and goes to Baylor. As for me I'm getting her that Wrangler for her birthday in November. Why spend the extra money because anything could happen to me but she will have the memory that her dad got her what she wanted and will probably drive that jeep till the wheels fall off (and replace them). And Everytime she starts that vehicle say my dad bought me this! To me that's priceless

I feel the Cherokee is safer but the Wrangler will be more memorable. Are you looking new or used? I would look at the safety ratings for the year vehicle you are interested in and compare them to the other one.

I would note used Wranglers demand just about new prices, at least in my area (Connecticut, maybe the Northeast in general).

Its quite crazy what they ask for (and get!) for a used Wrangler.

whose paying for gas and repair bills on the Wrangler? definitely won't be as economical as a Cherokee and the like.

I think Wranglers are pretty safe.

How many other vehicles come with a full roll bar from the factory?

My wife drives ours as her DD (2013 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 2 door).

The aftermarket for a Jeep is like no other if she wants to make it her own.

Wow! Thanks for all of you that chimed in. Appreciate it!

Yeah, the newer wranglers seem to be around the same cost as the older ones.

They are and with the lower finance rate(if you plan to finance) the new ones sometimes are a better deal than the couple year old ones.

Thank God you weren't looking at the Cherokee, it was awkward looking and under powered with a meh trans (then again, my old friend has poor tasted and didn't bother with maintenance)

Only A holes drive tiny cars, think they can squeeze in anywhere, and then cause a crash and get totally crushed, and apparently, they roll really easy. Don’t drive little cars.

A couple years ago, I would have said the Cherokee was probably safer. That's until my wife smoked a guy that ran a stop sign. She hit him broadside at about 50. Wasn't a straight panel left in front of the rear doors, every bag went off.
She didn't have a scratch. I was very happily surprised. I'd trust my daughter in a Wrangler.

On today's episode of America's funniest car crashes...

Damn, all jokes aside, those are terrible, I especially feel terrible for the Soul
