Dee Zee Tailgate Assist

I just installed the tailgate assist, and was wondering if it's operating the same for those of you that have it installed. When I open the tailgate, it drops fast for a few inches before the assist catches. Is that normal?

Mine drops slowly almost from the beginning. Let it settle in and see what happens. Could always ask for a new small piston part from them.

Yeah mine does the same thing. It's due to the angle of the catch point. Basically the support doesn't actually grab for the first few inches of travel.

That seems normal based on my experience. It catches after a couple inches.

Well ****. Looks like I put the piston in upside down. When the instructions said attach the larger part of the shock, I took that to mean the larger part of the piston where the cap is. That cap is what made me think that was the larger part. I looked up pictures and videos, and noticed everyone else's was installed opposite of mine. So I just flipped it around, and it catches much earlier now.

Well damn... Glad you posted! I though the initial drop was normal... I flipped mine around and now it catches as soon as you open and let go!

The barrel of the shock (fat end) attaches to the truck and the arm attaches to the tailgate.

Both those are right and I believe the instructions tell you to connect the top first then the bottom but I found I could not get the bottom on with the top connected as the shock would hit the truck. Connect the bottom first then the top.

Yep that's the correct way. I had mine flipped. Duh!

Mine does the same thing. I use to own a Nissan Titan that had a factory one. Titan goes slow right from beginning.

Checked mine and the install is correct but the shock also holds the tail gate ( left side ) and not the cable. The right side ( passenger side ) cable holds the tail gate. Any thoughts ?
