So I am going to change my fluid soon (no flush-dont jump me lol), and was thinking about trying to prolong the life of the tranny considering the heat is what kills these automatics (from what iv heard) I was looking into deep pans. I noticed that steel pans are significantly cheaper then aluminum, are they still beneficial if they are steel?

Any matt if you happen to see this, please let me know if you have access to these for 2nd gens

also, with a deep pan, would I need a filter extension?

Hold on, and I'll post my pic of it...if you have it, you need to ditch it first...they are a known to clog up and make your trans overheat.

Now, when I had my trans rebuilt in my Gen2, the trans tech told me a deeper pan wasn't necessary, cause it wasn't a built trans. But, he would not warranty the trans unless I had him remove that check valve and run an aftermarket cooler.

hmm...I am sure it is still there...how do you go about removing that?

a cooler has been on the list, maybe I should do that vs a deep pan.

when I go to change the fluid btw, should I have it flushed? I was told that flushing was a no no NO unless it had been done regularly, but I also read somewhere that if the fluid has a burnt smell to it that it needs to be flushed, otherwise I am condemning the tranny to fail within 100 miles.

Cody, the only steel deep pan I know of is a Derale, and it should come with an extension. You can buy them seperatly. I don't believe the pan made a huge difference on my truck.
I've also removed the check valve and have an aftermarket cooler. Those probably helped. You want the biggest cooler you can afford.
You can remove the valve and replace it with a male inverted flare to pipe thread, then pipe to hose fitting. Cut the valve from the hose and feed it on the barb then clamp it tight!
I don't believe in transmission flushes.

okay thanks al and adam.

so I should do these while the fluid is drained, correct??

and considering yalls opinions, I am thinking I will just opt out of the pan, which is about 50-200 bucks and put that money towards a cooler.

As for the flush..I was just going to change the fluid. I have heard a lot of the flushes on any component being more bad then beneficial.

also, before I forget, I was gonna make another thread but figured Id mind as well ask now. Any tips of tightening/adjusting the bands? upon research have read that they should be adjusted every 24/30 months or 24/30k miles...which I was unaware of!

Well, you need to keep in mind there are two types of trans flushes that can be performed. The first on and best one, is simply where they pump the old fluid from the trans, through the cooler lines and replace all the fluid. The second, involves adding a cleaning chemical to flush away clutch material, etc...this is NOT recommended on a transmission that hasnt had regular flushes done...like say every 20K-30K miles. Reason being, the chemical used, as it removes stuff can actually open the tolerances in the clutches, etc in the trans, causing problems.

As many miles as your transmission has Cody I wouldn't flush it. Change it in a year if you like to remove the filter maybe.
I have the band tightening specs but need to know if you have a 46re or 46 rh.

His is a 98, so it's the 46RE...last year for the 46RH was 95.

I was going to change the fluid/filter soon because I believe it has a leak, have heard some metal on metal sounds here recently....and was going to try to address where it was leaking from and fixing it at the same time. I will post pics where I think its leaking from.

as for the bands, was gonna use this guide
94+ Ram AT band adjustment

Biggest thing that people do wrong with flush also is they don't replace the filters which is insane. Most important part is filters if you did nothing else which I know is not possible replace the filters.
