I just replaced my 2014 2500 DEF pump and injector. Before driving, I wanted to see if they worked. So I attached the injector to the electrical connection and DEF supply line but didn't bolt it down. Then I turned the vehicle on to see if it squirted DEF and it didn't. Is it supposed to squirt while idling?

I believe that DEF is only injected into the exhaust stream under certain engine conditions. Basically, when it's up to normal operating temp. At least, that's what ChatGPT says. But, it's wrong almost as often as it's right.

NOx are oxides of nitrogen, principally nitrogen oxide and nitrogen dioxide. They are constituents that are emitted under combustion at high temperatures. They contribute to ozone formation.

Therefore, there is probably little or no DEF injected into a cold engine.

Yes it was.

Sounds like it may be fine then. My understanding of the system is that the pump stays running to keep the system primed, but the injector only flows DEF when the engine is at operating temp, and possibly when some other conditions are met as well.

Thanks for all the help guys!!!
The only thing I need to know now is whether I need to go to the dealer to have the message cleared?

Just a FYI, if you have a volt meter, you can test the resistance. I just had one that went back and i was reading 270 ohms.

Try taking it to a car parts place with the readers and have them reset the code. I think there is a # of cycles before clearing thing

Thanks, I talked to a diesel mechanic and he said the computer needed to be "flashed" or "re-flashed" and that the dealer could do it cheaper because he would need to purchase the software to do it.

Ok gentlemen, here is an update with my situation. I ended up taking it to the dealership and they ran a diagnostic and then drove it around and did what they do to clear the message. They said everything was ok now.
Since then, I was wondering if my DEF pump was working right because the fluid level was not budging. I just figured it was too full. I took a trip about an hour both ways pulling my trailer and it finally started to move. Between pulls, driving the truck around town, the warning "DEF System, See Dealer" flashed for about 5 seconds and went away (no codes). I pulled trailer home and nothing since. However, it does seem like the fluid level is not moving again. Prior to any of these problems it seemed like the truck was using up a ton of the stuff. I am worried something is still wrong and that my DEF is getting old. WHAT DO YOU THINK GUYS.
