Ok guys. I am going to try and explain this as best I can. I have been noticing on my Trinity while monitoring I am picking up KNK ST Retard. It usually ranges from 0.50 to as high as 6.00 under normal driving conditions. By normal I mean just cruising at highway speeds and keeping my foot out of it. i changed the plugs today because I have been also noticing that my mpg has gone down for no apparent reason and I had 57000 miles on the original plugs. I'm also noticing when I'm cruising at about 60-65 the base spark is ranging from 18.00 to 23.00ish but then without me giving or taking away gas it will drop to like 3.00-6.00 for no reason. I did some data logging and at the risk of sounding like a dumba$$ I really do t know what the hell I'm looking at. If someone could or would be willing to help me out, I'd be happy to data log and post the results or send them to you so that you can point me in the right direction or tell me I'm crazy and this is normal.

I do t know if it'll help but my mods are: catch can, 87mm throttle body, diablo sport trinity with Hemifever tune, S&B CAI, mufflex DOD14.

The ST KR at part throttle sounds high. I get 0 ST KR at part throttle and .5 ST KR at WOT. I am running HF 91 tune with 93 gas. Try switching to a lower tune. You shouldnt be getting any KR at part throttle.

I am running a HF tune with 93 gas as well. When I switch to a Diablo sport 91 canned tune the ST retard has been as high as 14.00 at WOT and there is noticeable ping

Thats high. I read you did a plug change. Did you gap the plugs before install?

This was before the plug install and yes I gapped them. Like I said though. That 14 number is ONLY when running the diablo canned 91 or 93 tune and at WOT.

Ok please don't think I am saying I know what I am talking about, but I did read up on knock / false knock before. From what I remember the knock sensors are like microphones that pick up the noise. So some engines can have false knock which can be caused by a dipstick touching a header or a cold air intake etc. Anything that causes the mics to pick up the sound can be misconstrued as knock. Possibly. From what I read if the knock retard doesn't rise WITH RPMs, then it is false knock. That is what I googled a while back. My truck does the same 6.00 at rare times but it is not consistent and certainly NOT with the rise in rpms. I can always hear my intake whining/vibrating sound when it does it. Again, this is just what I read. And I did NOT stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night so...........Of course the audible "pinging" would be a definite knock for sure.

I should add that it also seems like the "knock" happens when the trans is in a higher gear than it needs to be. Kind of like just before it lugs the engine. My truck runs strong. Very strong. I guess it's just be being **** about it.

I did try Sean's 93 "less hot" version he sent me one time before and it actually had a lot more knock retard than the "hotter" version. That was in 90 degree weather, back to back tunes, two days in a row on the same exact 30mile trip to and from work location. One day with hotter tune, next day with milder tune, then back to the hotter version. Same gas in tank (always 93). Strange. Maybe try it with stock tune and log it and see what she does?

Do you always fill up at the same station? Possibly bad gas or has it been going on for awhile...

What is your truck shifting at? I get almost 0 KR @ 5600 and closer to 3 KR @ 5900 then higher KR at 6200. So I backed down to 5900(mostly to try and protect the trans).

I have logged the stock tune, diablo and hf. I get the least kr with hf tune.

I do get the least and mist predictable KR with the had tube. The diablo gives me the most by far. I'm going to have to do some data logging this weekend and see if it's something on Sean's end that he can tweak. I only had him make one adjustment when I got his tune cause it was cold out and as we all know these hemis are cold natured and usually perform better in lower temps.

When I got my tune done, Sean basically thought I had **** in my tank I had let it run down to the secondary low fuel light. Still wasnt enough my truck was pulling timing like crazy. I ran my truck completely empty till it died carried a gas can with me that had 94 in it. I got the second batch of 94 from a different Chevron logged and I wasnt pulling any timing at full throttle. Do you have a 180 thermostat?

About Knock Retard (KR) | ZZP News
This is what I read a while back. My truck does the "spike and then immediately drops off" thing that this tells about in the article, so I stopped worrying about mine at all. I just drive it. It is an interesting read. Hope it helps.

BTW, Sean sets most of his tunes for the 180 tstat...

I should've mentioned I don't usually see the KR until the truck is warm. Maybe I'll try the 180 to see if it helps. Got any info on where to get it? Part#?

There are many you can get them from autozone, I ordered my from Matt at Moes performance with my other parts. Stay away from the Jet ones there just repackaged and marked up. Im running a CST I have had no issues.

I just picked up a duralast thermostat from auto zone. I will probably put it in tomorrow. I also did a couple of data logs today. One with the stock tune and one with the hemifever tune. So we'll see I guess.

I popped in the Duralast 180 t-stat from Autozone (part# 4128) then set my cooling fans to 195 on the trinity. Sean from HF also looked over some logs and sent me a tweaked tune. Uploaded it and WOOSH! She gone! Still pulling a maximum of 4.00-4.50 KR but it's mostly under heavy load. So far so good. Will do some more logging this weekend and see if anything else needs to be tweaked.
