I am starting to get this noise between 40 and 70 MPH in the truck. it sounds like an oscillating white (changes pitch). I hear it more so when I am coasting. the frequency is closer together then and when i am on the gas it is a bit more spread apart. above 70, i barely notice anything.

I also can hear what can best be subscribed as a whooshing noise when the tranny is downshifting as I brake to a stop. I have read that the trans fluid entering the cooler can cause a noise that reverberates in the fan shroud so I plan to look at that this weekend.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Truck is a 2009 with 85,000 miles. I have only owned it for 12,000 of those. according to dealer service records available online there was Axle service performed at 72,000 miles (which was right before I bought it). Vehicle has pretty good service details and intervals.

2009 Ram 4x4 Laramie, Hemi, 6 spd.

Axle service? As in differential fluid service?

09's thru 11's had a recall on the rear pinion for repair or replacement of the unit. It is possible that it was done and was not done correctly by service or they just tightened the pinion nut and not taken care of the problem.

Check to see that the recall was done and done properly. I think it was N-08. It is a widely known problem for those years.

Did you do the recall?

Some guys have reported the whine AFTER the recall.

Swoosh could just be gas in gas tank?

I did take fronts off this evening. Spinning the pass side I heard a faint clicking sound in the hub area. It was all tight as a tick.

I dropped it off at the local dealer this morning. Svc manager rode me up to my office so he could listen. Im hoping the recall was not done and that is my issue. on the ride over, he thought there were two different noises. maybe a bearing and the diff.

I do know it is louder when I open the rear window but not the others.

That is what the recall was about, your exact problem.

So the recall wasn't done or wasn't done properly it seems. I would talk to the service manager about this and have Chrysler pay for it.

the recall was done on the truck by the dealership that I bought the truck from. It was completed in October 2013. They are telling me this was not part of the recall because the recall was just the nut. But I did read on a forum: somewhere that over tightening that nut can cause the bearing to wear prematurely. The truck has 13000 miles on it since the recall repair. The dealership I purchased it from is going to talk with one of the owners to see if they can cut me a break on the parts or labor to help me out. All I know is that I'm about to throw up for putting almost a thousand dollars in a truck I just bought.

But the biggest question in my mind is why the carrier bearing is well? Isn't that one on up the drive shaft a bit

I just don't get why these fknuts ever changed the gears in the first place, I mean damn, we have had the same gears forever and there was NOTHING wrong with them. Chrysler never heard of the term, "IF IT AINT BROKE DONT FIX IT?"

Bottom line you have to get it fixed, so if you have to pay go ahead. But, get the paper work on the oct fix and take them to small claims court. Obviously it was those azzholes fault and they are trying to stick you, a judge will see right through that.

And consumer reports most reliable truck is, drum roll.... Tundra

Too bad the Petaluma Toyota Dealer is such a azzwipe, or I might be driving one myself. Soon as they got the 385 HP the Tundra is a great choice for people not needing a heavy duty but wanting a reliable pick up.

Yup... but it was a 2004 and I didn't know how much longer it had. Valves rattled like a diesel when it started. I'm just miffed that only 6 months after they fixed recall its gone. Hopefully the svc manager can get somewhere with the GM and get me a break. Also getting a second opinion from another independent mechanic.
