If you have the number 1 cylinder piston at the top of the compression stroke (TDC), looking at your distributor cap, as it would attach to the distributor, is the rotor button contact pointing at the number 1 plug wire? Is so, you are correct.

TMyers is right, look at the cap for a dummy check. But there should also be a tiny notch in the cam sensor for cyl 1 TDC. The rotor should be as close to perfectly centered above that as possible.

That will get you pretty close. But I still suggest taking it to a shop with the scanner to set the fuel sync. It will maximize fuel economy and smoothness.
