Hey fellas, Pokey here.

16516.jpg

Think my vehicle search is over. I've driven quite a few cars and trucks and haven't felt as excited about anything as I have this 2009 Dodge Ram! Thought I'd register and see what the pro's say.

Could any of you in the know comment/critique the deal I'm about embark on.

Found this truck ad on craiglist:

2009 DODGE RAM BIG HORN EDITION 5.7L HEMI NEW TIRES 80,000 MILES EXCELLENT CONDITION $14500 OBO OR WILL POSSIBLY TRADE FOR A CORVETTE C5 ROADSTER.

Met the guy and drove the truck Friday at lunch. Loved it. Right in my price range (can't afford much more). However two things stuck out.

  • In the above ad, he wrote that the truck had 80,000 miles. When I sat in it Friday, it had 88,000 miles.
  • The original ad said $14,500 obo. Friday he said his number is $15,000.

With those things being noted, the truck still checks in as a tremendous value when compared to the internet's recommended appraisals.

KBB: Good condition private party - $15,426
NADA: Average condition trade in value - $15,325
Edmunds: Trade in value - $16,965

Had my buddy run the carfax and it looks great. The current owner bought the truck new (he's a salesman) and has had the truck serviced routinely at the same dealership he bought it from.

Nice guy, retiring, wants to buy a c5 vette convertible as his retirement gift to himself.

What would you offer for the truck? Anything concern you about the purchase? I really love that truck. :favorites13:

Looks to be in pretty good shape. Just make sure the recalls have been serviced/checked out. See if he'd take $14k.

I'd make sure to negotiate these things. It does look to be a good deal, but when I am told one thing to get me interested, and then find out what I was told is not true, I begin to wonder what else is there ??

I have seen many times people and dealers on craigslist will say 80k or 90k miles, when it fact it is higher, but still in the 80k or 90k range.

And the change/increase price, well, the ad says 14,500, so 14,500 it is, or I would walk.

These two things to me are misleading, and I can't say if they are intentional or not, you'd have to decide that, but if they are, what else is he not telling you, or lying about ??

I also have seen people put 60k for mileage, but they also state it will go up as it is their daily driver.

A week ago, the guy kind of put me off stating he had a buyer at $15,000. I guess that fell through and so now it's my turn up. I guess that is what motivated him to raise the price?

When I mentioned during the test drive that the ad stated 80,000 miles. He acted surprised that he misrepresented the mileage on the net. Felt pretty flakey.

Regardless, it's a one owner truck with new tires, said he's serviced the brakes, and no-wrecks appear on the car fax.

I'm going to have my mechanic look it over thoroughly. I'd love to get the price back down to $14,500 or less somehow, but after this long term vehicle search I've been on, I won't walk away for $500. Hope that's not foolish.

It's not a 4x4 right? And has a lot of miles for that year. However, 2009 is when Rams got real good with the back coil suspension and the 390hp. You don't get the 8 speed, but you have a nice truck there for a reasonable price. Make sure he has the pink slip and will accompany you to the DMV, and tell him 14 cash, IMO. It is a rule that if you pay asking price on a truck you loose your man card. Use your poker pokey and push that old retiring **** around some.

Sounds like a typical salesman story. IMHO, offer him 14K and up to no more than what he was originally asking for.

Thanks for the advice. Hope it works! I am in love with this truck. :buffer:

Take someone you trust with you to look it over then, as your 'love for the truck' may lead you to make a bad decision, or at least not realize all of what yuo are getting into.

Not saying it's a bad deal, but when you say yer in love with it, it makes me think you have already made up your mind to get it no matter what we or anyone else tells you.

Like everyone else, I would be very suspicious of a guy who raises the price $500 and misstates the mileage by 8,000; particularly, a professional car salesman.
If it gets the OK, from your mechanic, I would show the guy $14,000 cash and nicely say " take it or leave it".

I have taken heed of everyone advice and appreciate it. I should clarify, he's a salesman for a manufacturing company and not cars. Sorry if I mislead.

It's a decent deal. I think you could find better with lower miles.

He's got the right hitch cover though.. BOOMER

Hey guys, sorry to bug you again.

16516.jpg

Is there anything I should be worried about with buying this 5.7 hemi ram truck?

88,000 miles is a bit higher than I was hoping for my next vehicle, but I've also went from looking at 2005-2006 GMC Crews to this 2009 Ram. Hard to look back now!

Any pointers? Tips? Things to look out for?

I just started reading about the "catch can." I guess I better hope he's already had one of those on the truck?

You can always get your own catch can and have the intake cleaned.

Sounded to me in my very brief reading about catch can's that without one oil can enter the intake? Which can cause the truck to underperform?

Still, nothing I should be worried about if he doesn't already have one?

I would have to sum up pretty much whatever else has said.

He said 14,500 on an ad and now its 15k? When my parents tried to sell a car the person tried to drop it by $2,000! So show him the green at $14k and say here it is or there I go.

I agree about your mechanic looking it over and making sure it's not busted up in a place that you wouldn't see until after you bought it and are working under it.

Looks like a very clean truck though and ran for a lot of miles.

My 2007 currently has 68,500 miles on her so just a comparison there. Good luck and keep us posted.

The catch can is patched into the PCV system to catch the oil that is pulled from the engine, by vacuum, and into the intake manifold.
Engines have had PCV systems since the 60's, so a catch can isn't going to make or break your engine, but it can result in a cleaner intake system and slightly improved performance, as the oil vapor will build up in the intake system and may lower the octane rating of your fuel.
Lacking a catch can is not a sign that you shouldn't buy a vehicle. It just means that an intake cleaning should be added to your list of improvements to make.. preferably right after the catch can. :)

Wow, thanks John. Great response, much appreciated.
