I have a Drill Doctor and it works great. The down side is that it costs more than a basic set of cobalt bits.

Ya, but it sure beats a trip to Lowes or Depot in the middle of a project, especially if alcohol is your assistant.

Hand sharpening drill bits on a bench grinder is an art form that takes a lot of practice to perfect. I'm a machinist by trade and it was a solid year in the trade before I really got the hang of it. Since then I've sharpened thousands of drill bits. From 1/16th all the way to a 3" bit. Yes 3"..!! The technique can only be taught in person.

+1 for a drill doctor. You always get the right angle with it

I would say just add a basic set of dewalt titanium coated bits to your collection and add some kind of lube with it 25 bucks for a basic set with common sizes and if you needed more options buy a step bit to fill in the gaps between the bits. That's cheeper than a drill doctor. I have a drill doctor at work and it rarely gets used but it does work.

I hand grind on a bench grinder. From the right side of the wheel point the dril bit up and a slight angle and lightly rotate 1/4 turn counter clockwise as you strick the crinding wheel. then turn the bit 180deg and do the other half. You shouldnt have a 'Point" per say. In fact if you have a good bit use it as a visual to compair bit grind angle. It takes time. But if you take your time you'll get it. Its harder to explain than it is to do it. It really takes two angles to get it right. Up on an angle and side angle. Ok I quit. Explaining is hard.

I hand sharpen all my bigger bits. But I also spent 3 years as an apprentice in a machine shop. Like Hodrodharley said its an art. Took me at least a few months to get a bit to cut properly and to the correct size. I normally have a cheap set of bits in the shop and in the service truck. I get then from Canadian Tire when they come on sale. get 250 bits from 1/16-1/2 for around $30
