I've only owned a manual 4WD in the past and had no problem going to 4 Lo. Got me a Fourth Gen used (didn't come with a owners manual) and always thought the 4 lo was broken because it never went into gear when I turned the switch. I took it into a shop for state inspection and told them to check out the 4WD system because 4 Lo didn't work. Got the truck back and they told me it has to be in neutral in order to switch into 4 Lo. My 4WD system if fine and I felt like a complete idiot.

That's not uncommon for all manufacturer's. They all need to be in neutral to go into 4 lo with elctronics doing the shifting.

That's really any 4wd that I've ever driven. My 2500 is manual shift and it requires you to be in neutral and not moving.

Hi McKnigha,

I don't know about the 09, but on my 13 you also have to be going below three mph or the dash indicator will just flash at you until you below that speed and in neutral.
Enjoy the new truck,

I had a Samurai and a Bronco both with locking hubs. As long as I wasn't moving I could go into 4 Lo

Locking hubs doesn't mean anything. I.seriously doubt the Bronco would go from 2 or 4 hi to low without being in neutral. I don't know anything about the samurai .

Yeah, I've driven my grandpa's 60's bronco and you couldn't go into or out of 4 low without being in neutral.

I had an 85 bronco and I could. Something could of been messed up with the 4WD. I don't know. It seemed to work fine when I used it.

Well I'd like to see how you take a transmission that's in gear with a load on the transfer case, and go from hi to low.

Putting the clutch in helps, but isn't the same thing as neutral... Possible point of confusion in the arguments on this page?

I hate the electric shift transfer case personally. I love being in a pickle, and thinking, ok... in 4-6 seconds I will have 4wd.

Actually to the transfer case it is the same provided you are stopped.

I understand that, and agree that it is really semantics, but I am not sure that everyone posting in this thread understands it which is why I was pointing it out.

jlb,

Thanks for the info. Both of my previous 4WDs were manual shift so that could of been it. Back then I just put it in gear and go. :)

My 14 does not take long to go onto 4x4 maybe a second at most

Ya the 13 I had with the fancy cluster actually tells you to put it in neutral whenever you go to 4lo. Was my 1st 4x4 with a electronic 4wd. Well 1st one that actually worked.

Same, flashes 2 or 3 times and clicks in within a second or two.

I've done the same thing, it's my first 4x4. I thought it was broken when the 4low light kept flashing.

Pulled out the manual.
