E-Fan Problem

Anyone have an E-fan just stop working? I noticed the temp go up a couple degrees from where it normally sits, (189) the other day at an idle. Light turned green and I watched the temp go back down as I gained speed. I have been out of town since this happened. Got back and figured I would check everything out. Coolant level and what not. Started up the truck with the hood open to see if the E-Fan would activate when it needed to. Nope. Never came on. I shut the truck down when it hit 201. I checked all the wiring and connections, and everything is good. I didn't check to see if the fan will actually spin, but i will when i get home tomorrow. I never have had any issues with them on the older model vehicles i built, so I'm wondering what the heck the issue could be.

Is that set by the tuner? If not it kicks on with the AC? I've got tons of questions about the E Fan.

From what I understand you can change the temp on the tuner for when you want it to turn on.

Yes, you can adjust it with the tuner.

Im not sure at what temp the fan used to come on at. Im wanting to say 160, but I could be remembering incorrectly.. But its not coming on at all now. And I didn't change anything, so..

I will go ahead and play with the tuner to see if somehow the ''brains'' (ECU, PCM, Ect.) of my truck decided that the fan shouldn't come on till AFTER my engine melts due to extreme temps. Not sure how or why that would happen, but its worth a shot.

I will post back tomorrow with the results of that venture...

I think you can set it to come on with the AC as an option as well. I think...

Im gonna play around with the tuner and the E-Fan options tomorrow. I will give some actual info then. Unless someone chimes in before then.

As a side note, I was actually very happy and impressed with the E-Fan till it decided to take a vacation.

205º-220º is considered normal stock operating range

if you have a 180º stat, the fan should be set (in your tuner)
to come on about 10º higher than that, other wise it would run constantly.

Turning on the AC should make the fan come on regardless of engine temp,
since its connected via the ac condenser fan pigtail in the wiring harness.

Yeah, my truck ran at 203ish before the 180 stat. After the stat, it ran 189-190 all the time. Though i never did set my fan to come on at a certain temp. So unless that was in the custom tune already, I guess there is some sort of standard temp it comes on at.. If I can get the fan to come on at all, I will go into the tuner and see if me setting it will keep my temp lower than 189-190. (that always bugged me)

If you have a custom tune (Hemifever etc.) and he knew you had a 180º T stat,
he would have likely adjusted the fan settings already, if not the default temps in a Diablo tuner are set for 222º.

There are three categories for adjustment in the modify tune section :

Cooling Fans AC Off:
High MPH HS Fan ON : 222.79º default value*
Low MPH HS Fan ON : 222.79º default value


Cooling Fans AC On:
HS Fan ON : 222.79º default value

Not all 180 T-stats open at exactly 180º, most are around 185º.

Once you find out what temp your t-stat actually opens,
adjust all 3 fan settings in your tuner to about 8º-10º higher.

Mine opens at 183 so I set all my fan on temps to 190º

220 is the factory setting for when the fan comes on.

If I remember correctly, on my 2010 with efan, tuner, and 180 tstat...I had my fan set to come on at 190 and go off at 180. Ran it that way for around 20k with no problems. If adjusting the settings on your tuner doesn't fix the problem, you may want to look at replacing your fan, may have shorted our or something.

Sean set mine for 193, on average I run 185-190 but if I push my truck a little on 100 degree days like today it hits 200 and stays until I stop playing.
I don't think it's worth the worry. I'm going to change back real soon.

Well i went in and set the E-Fan to come on at 190 on the tuner. Started the truck up and waited. Watched the temp go up past that and fan never came on. Then just to be sure, I changed the setting in the tuner so that the fan would come on with the AC. Tried flipping it on (every possible setting on the AC), and the fan still didn't come on.

I also spun the fan to see if it was locked up somehow. It spins freely and normally when I manually move it. So no issues with a physical malfunction.

So now Im left with just an electrical failure, or the actual motor in the fan dying out. Unless Im missing something..

Either way, Im surprised because i haven't had the fan on for long at all. Maybe 6 months and 5,000 miles. If that.

Any thoughts?..

Should I just accept this as a failure and replace the whole thing? I feel reluctant to spend money replacing something that broke with the exact same thing that caused me to replace it in the first place. But this was one of the few mods that I could actually feel a difference with after installing it.

Any chance you still have the oem fan the truck came with? If so, swap it and see if it works. That way if it doesn't you'll know whether it's the fan or something else.

That would have definitely been something I tried. Unfortunately I tossed it when I installed the Efan. Like literally. That bolt was a real **** to get off.


Wondering which spot to cram a voltage meter or something in that plug to see if its getting a ''signal'' to turn on. Then i would know that the issue is in the fan assembly itself.

Just thought of this... Is there a fuse associated with the fan? Maybe that kicked the bucket, and would be an easy fix...

I can feel it in my steering wheel when my e fan kicks on. If I'm just sitting in a parking lot I can hear it as well.
Does anyone know if you can put the stock fan back on and leave the e fan or do you have to change everything back over?
