So I currently have the 5.7 Hemi. Is the EcoDiesel just as powerful for towing purposes is it reliable I mean there haven't been any recalls or problems noted with it is that right? And I would only assume the mileage is slightly better

I don't have the exact info in front of me with the tow eating specs but I know depending on the configuration it's about 9-10k. I think the hemi is rated for a bit more. That being said, the diesel makes more torque, just less HP. It is no slouch when it comes to moving things, it's just limited by the packaged that's around the motor.

As for recalls, the eco diesel has a slew of consumer issues. That being said mine has been 100% trouble free. You have to look at the overall demographic. Diesels need heat to perform properly, most of the issues are from people who frequent short trips and don't ever get the motor or emissions equipment hot enough to function as intended. I run lots of highway, and make sure I get the truck hot. It's gotten a bad reputation, but really isn't a bad motor if used as intended.

Unloaded I get mid 20s, and I'm on larger tires and a mild lift. I don't tow much anymore but most report mid teens running at proper speeds.

In all, if you use it as a primary vehicle and run mostly highway between towing trips, it's worth considering but I wouldn't dump your current rig for one if they are optioned the same. If the 2016 is an upgrade and you're concerned about losing capability, you won't. Do not get it if you do lots of city driving and short trips. You will quickly end up with a nightmare on your hands.

I'm not sure what marketing genius ever decided a diesel motor marketed for short trips was a good angle, but they are idiots.

so far knock on wood I've had no issues with mine and I've towed upwards/over 8K lbs. Is it going to fly up grades at 75+mph while towing, not likely but your an idiot for doing that in any vehicle towing. It does have enough get up n go to pass traffic not as commanding as the Hemi but I'll get 14-15 mpg towing that 8K load where as the Hemi is probably single digit fuel economy.
If you like the fun pedal of the Hemi, keep what you have. If your looking for better efficiency while driving/towing than entertain the EcoDiesel. Not even the Ford Ecoboost can do both, it's either eco or boost.

I agree completely. There's alot of mis information with the ecos. The other forum is full of "first truck/first diesel" people who had no idea wtf any diesel requires. They were drawn by the 30mpg hype in a truck. So yea, the target demographic was a big cause of the frequent issues.

Does this truck pull like my old 2500 no. Buts it's a 1500. I don't expect it to. Like crash said just be mindful. It's not fast, nor is it slow. It a just got "nuts" does everything well. I will say, with a tune, it will blow the tires off as much as ESC allows.

I came from a 2013 ecoboost. There is no Eco. It's a bad ass motor, but thirsty. I was disappointed as even trying to hyper mile my best tank was 18 mpg. Butttttt, it was the fastest stock truck I've ever been in, bar none.

I wouldn't throw myself into one again tho. Diesels in general are under so much scrutiny from the EPA anymore , i feel the future is grim, tho I hope I'm wrong. Big block gassers are becoming more and more common. Even tuners are waving the white flag, deletes are no more.....i could rant forever.

In closing, if you just gotta have it, for whatever reason, it's a great truck. But these trucks are hit or miss.

Yep. I am in NJ.

Hot as **** in the summer, cold as balls in the winter. Plug it in to keep glow plugs happy, cardboard in front of radiator and temps are good.

Main issues I see are clogged ERG/DPF. In the winter sometimes frozen DEF. They don’t like short trip city driving, if that’s all you do, don’t get one, you’ll have issues.

They can be a reliable engine if you treat them properly. Don’t idle it excessively, they plug up. Make sure it gets regular highway driving so it can regen properly. As soon as average temps are at or below freezing, put the winter front on. Maintenance is big, fuel filters, air filters, oil changes. They can be very sensitive to dirty air filters, you’ll get a CEL.

As a tech though, I’d personally never own one, especially out of warranty. I’d stick with the hemi. You’ll get less mpg, but initial cost, maintenance, fuel price are all lower. Many places diesel is as much if not more than gas. As well a much more proven/reliable engine. That’s just my opinion though.

I use the block heater anytime the weather is about freezing to get the engine warmer faster. I use a sectional stainless winter front made by Precision Manf about when the weather stays below 40°F. Mopar makes an adjustable front cover you so the same with. The upper sections get closed off as the temps drop below freezing. Three at 30°F, two sections at 20°F, one at 10°F and all of them by 0°F unless your towing seems to work good.

What are these inserts you speak of? My truck didn't come with a winter front

It's polished stainless steel inserts from Precision Manufacturing in Canada, I don't think they make them anymore. There is even block off plates for the lower openings(see pic)

The Mopar one for the EcoDiesel with the adjustable flaps:

If you have a CTD(or even the EcoD), look on Geno's Garage, they have a couple of them.

I doubt they make 'em anymore either, given that nowadays we have Active Grille Shutters (I even have those in front of the smallest gasser engine Ram makes...)

I need to look at some options instead of the cardboard I use. Might make a set of insert plates for the grill. Thanks!

Any 1500 with the 8 speed will have the active grill shutters. The eco diesels came with an additional winter front that’s supposed to be on any time temps are at or below freezing. It’s to prevent icing in the intake/charge air system.

Yep, don't have the extra winter front for mine. I use cardboard right now in front of rad.

My buddy just rid of his, his motor blew with 50k miles. He uses his trucks for work this truck left him on the side highway. He traded it while it was in the shop for 6.4. I have wanted one but I’m scared of the stories, then again you hear of people that zero issues.
