I am an Ecodiesel owner and here are the current issues.....
Negative issues:
1.) There is a recall under way for the EGR cooler. Do to the continuous cycling of extreme heat, the factory coolers are leaking. FCA has not yet supplied a cooler to fix the problem. There are aftermarket coolers that will withstand the heat cycling and not leak.
2.) Do not buy one if you intend to run short trips. These engines must be brought up to full temperature and ran at highway speeds on a regular basis to assure they do a proper exhaust regen.
3.) Depending on the time of year and where you live, diesel can be either cheaper or more expensive than gasoline. Right now I'm benefiting from having diesel prices which are lower than even 87 octane.
4.) The oil change is expensive as the engine requires synthetic oil at no fewer that 10 quarts. The oil change is also a long process to assure the oil has drained completely from the engine. Expect at least 1/2 hour worth of drain time.
5.) Fuel & Air filters. You can't just forget that they have one. These must be changed out on regular intervals.
6.) This engine is de-tuned to meet EPA strict emission standards. Prior to 2017, these engines got in excess of 30mpg highway! Because of the Volkswagen debacle, FCA was forced by the EPA to offer owners a settlement of 3,000 so they would bring in their trucks to have the ECM reprogrammed so it would meet emissions while driving, not just stationary testing. Due to this re-programming, there was a loss of fuel mileage and a bad hesitation (turbo not programed to kick in until 2000 rpm). This occurs until the engine is at full operating temperature.
With the new 2017 plus factory tune, my 2018 averages about 26 to 28 on the open highway. The hesitation is still there until the engine reaches full operating temperature. There are Canadian tunes on the market to deal with the hesitation issues.
Would I buy one again? .....YES!
