Guys I need some help with a new noise coming from my 5.7 hemi. My truck is a 2006 Ram mega cab. No MDS. I have what I think sounds like a chirp. This chirp sound is there during a cold start, a warm start, after it has been sitting for days, or a restart after running for 10 minutes. The sound is there immediately after it is started. It doesn’t sound like the normal lifter tick. I have removed the serpentine belt and run the truck, the sound is still there. I have used a stethoscope to try and pin point where the sound is coming from but the only place I can hear it clearly is the driver side exhaust pipe just past the exhaust manifold. I tried to post a video of the sound but was unable to. Any help will be appreciated.

Does it go away after a few seconds/minutes?

Still hearing it after removing the belt, and hearing it mostly near the manifolds makes it seem like either a broken manifold bolt or some other exhaust leak in that area, but I certainly wouldn't describe an exhaust leak as a "chirp". My exhaust leak(s), I describe as sounding like a type writer.

I had a bad lifter that turned into a chirp noise that was most prominently heard in the drivers side fender well. The chirping was the sides of the metal post that retain the roller bearing eating my cam. Fingers crossed for you!

No it is not an exhaust leak. About 1 year ago I had the exhaust manifolds machine flat and put new bolts in. I have checked the bolts and they are tight and not broken. I have read one forum that talked about a broken valve spring that they heard in the exhaust pipe just below the exhaust manifold. But it was in a 04 truck. I have not seen anything about a 06. I just don’t know if it’s an issue for a 06 hemi. Thank you.

That is what I am afraid of. Just thought I would throw it out there and see if anyone had a broken spring with the same noise.

Maybe it’s time to pull the valve covers for an inspection, can you narrow it down to one side ?

Yes it is on the drivers side. I am planning on starting the tar down next Monday. I just never got a lifter tick. Started one morning and went straight to what I am call a chirp. Drove it for 2 days and it has been parked ever cents. Started chirping the next morning after I did an oil and filter change.

One more note. I have no codes and the motor runs smooth.

I’ve had a broken valve spring in both my 04 2500 and 2015 1500. Both times the engine ran like garbage. If you had a broken spring you would know. Definitely get that valve cover off though for an inspection.

Thought I would give an update on what I have found so far today. Removed the valve cover. I don’t see any broken valve springs, all rocker arms and springs seem to been traveling all the same distance. I will be putting a dial indicator on them tomorrow to see if one is not traveling as far as the rest of them indicate a bad lifter or came lobe. I did a comparison check and they are between 165 to 175 psi.

New update today. Both heads are off and lifters are inspected all lifters are in good shape except one. The one lifter rolls good but has pitting in the roller. But there is no frozen lifter roller. I did find 2 lose intake bolts under the A/C compressor. I read somewhere that it will make a chirping sound as the air gets pulled in. Does anyone have a good suggestion where and what kind of cam and lifter kit to go with? Stock or stage 1?
