Engine replace or rebuild

I have a 2012 dodge ram with 79000 miles engine light came on saying it was have a low oil pressure took it into a mechanic shop they said my lifters were knocking and upon inspection they found metal shavings in the oil. Don’t know what route to take rebuild or replacing. Any suggestions?

Take a look through some of the cam/ lifter threads,and you'll see the first thing you need to do is pull the intake manifold,then remove the vvt solenoid,if it's screen is full of metal filings,then it's usually reconmended to replace the engine. Search function should find you a pile of threads on this already.

That is very low mileage for engine issues? did it ever missfire? I would also check the pressure with a mechanical gauge does the truck have high idle hours? Like was it ever fleet owned or anything?

Never misfired. Oil pressure stays low at around 19 when driving stop driving due to knocking noise getting louder. As far has Idle hours/fleet owned I have no idea. Truck is in very good shape.

How often are your oil changes? could be sludged up Hemis need 4-5k oil changes max.

If you could get a recording and post it for us all to hear , it would help us determine source of noise.

What are the main uses gonna be ? Towing , off-road, 2x4 or 4x4 ?

What’s your budget ? Ballpark?
If you go new crate you are starting fresh and know where you stand warranty wise , at least for awhile.

With rebuilding you may be able to save a few , however no warranty , and with so many questionable parts out here , who knows ?

Have you thought of a 6.4 swap ?

With the 6.4 the 8 speed would be needed for the extra power .

19 psi while under load is pretty low for oil pressure. Even a bit on the low side for idling.

My self would before I did any engine parts removal I change the oil into a clean oil pan, then about 5-6 seconds after removing drain plug collect an oil sample an send it off to an oil lab either Fleetguard or Amsoil, I would then give the oil I drained out a good look over to see if any big pieces of metal come out along with how much if any fine metal particles are in the bottom if the pan. jmho

It is recommended to get a new intake manifold with engine failure. Something to do with the metal possibly getting into the plastic and coming loose later.

I'm sure there are some great engine rebuilders on the forum -- but if you plan on keeping the "very good shape" vehicle more than one or two years I would go the extra dollars and purchase a factory rebuilt engine, or even a new factory crate engine.

mmx has 2 great options for truck brand new complete crate or long block both are truck motor's . I just had same issue found low mileage mtr on Facebook . looking at it from outside looked new but inside lot of carbon build up . tore down installed cam ,lifters, springs, got rid of MDS put back together It sounds great and I know what shape it is in now. With that being said I have all the resources to do the job and I saved about 2000. I spent a lot of time looking at options for me . if you just want to swap out the motor the mmx complete crate deal is what I would do you will only need crank sensor for your year and put it in then drop it in truck . the long block is non MDS . which you need tuner for to turn off MDS in ECU added cost of 699.0 + tax USD. but the long block is 2000.0 cheaper look's like need a new oil pump and you need your old motors oil pan valve covers intake, timing chain cover ect. but both are brand new factory motors just my opinion. for a no hassle drop in that is a complete motor brand new only one sensor to swap out is the way to go . if you can afford it { the tuner I was referring to is a HP tuner } there are cheaper ones
