Hey everyone. I need some help with my truck. I have a 2012 1500 5.7 (140,000 KMs) that is near death or so I’m told. Apparently my cam shaft has been eating lifters. (I’m not all that mechanically minded so forgive me if what I say doesn’t make 100% sense I’m just repeating what I’ve been told by mechanics Dodge and various) Anyways I’ve been shown the metal filings in my oil and in my engine. It’s been taken apart to get this analysis ($1100) It makes a low pitch squealing sound almost like a fan belt.

So there’s the problem. I’m looking for the best solution. And my faith in mechanics is shaken. I figure the best advice I can get is from dodge owners that have the experience in engine swapping or rebuilds.

I’ve been told my best option is buying a long block and just transferring all the parts (electrical sensors etc) to the the long block from my old motor. I’ve also been told buying a new used motor say 2015 and up is also a viable solution.

Can anyone give me their experience or advice on what they have done.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Failed lifters are fairly common on these motors. The roller bearing siezes on the lifter which then starts to eat away at the cam lobes.

When this happens, you usually only have to replace the cam and lifters...it is rarely more serious than that.

Having said that, if the mechanics that have your truck apart are saying that they see more damage and that the block needs to be replaced, then you may not have a choice but to go that route...unless you can get a 2nd opinion from another local mechanic.

This is an extremely common issue with the 5.7hemi and the 2011/2012’s seem to be the worst year for them.

You can just have your current engine rebuilt with a new camshaft and all new lifters. At this point if you want to have a little fun and want to go aftermarket route look at buying an aftermarket cam, and hellcat lifters, delete MDS(what everyone suspects is the culprit) and tune the truck.

While you’re in there have the water pump, belt tensioner, and such replaced as they will already have to come off for the camshaft replacement

Ask them for proof and pictures of further damage requiring a full engine swap and post them on here. I highly doubt you need more than the usual lifters/cam though
