What are the possibilities of an install of a 6.4 392 in a 1500 ram?? This sounds like an awesome idea to me! Let me hear any difficulties anyone can think of!!

I would assume drivetrain linkage. Probably a lot of fab for mounting

Any problems on it being a 6 or 8 cylinder originally? Any extra reinforcement or additions to be made?

im not sure about going from a v6 to a v8 there might be a few more things that are different from a v6. fuel pump, motor mount, etc.

are you talking about the 6.4 out of say a charger or challenger or the 6.4 out of a 2500?

Just for compatibility sake and ease of installation i'd go with a 6.4L BGE (Big Gas Engine) out of a HD vs a Car. If you want more power throw a Comp Cam in it while the engines out and make the same power with better heads.

mine is the 6.4 from a car. all you have to do is swap a few misc parts from the old motor and your good there would still be tuning to do on either swap. its a easy swap if your mechanically inclined.

I'm not sure if the BGE's crazy EGR setup would complicate this swap. At the least you have to swap over a 5.7 Ram intake and plug any open coolant/exhaust ports. FYI, the compression is lower (10:1) on the BGE engine so unless you are going FI that's going to sap a little power compared to the SRT setup. +1 on the cam swap, the stock Ram 6.4 cam is do-do.

in my opinion the 6.4 truck motor is not any better than the 5.7 its realy close to the same numbers as the 5.7 and mod for mod if you compare it to the 6.4 apache motor the apache motor will make more power and torque as it already does. you can cam the truck motor and change the intake etc and you MIGHT be close to the same numbers as the apache in stock form they say the truck motor is built a little stronger but not enough for high boost. if you get a good deal on the truck motor id say go for it but if your buying one out right then id go with the apache

I’ve seen multiple people say the 6.4 block from the truck is built a lot stronger and the heads are the same material from the hellcat motors. Really the only thing different from a car to truck power numbers would be the cam and intake setup, that’s what changes your power

The 6.4 truck block and the Hellcat block are the same engine block.Jay greene just put a 426 cubed 6.4 truck engine in his truck, and Matt Fikac from Moes is running a 422 cubed Hellcat block in his truck.Kurtis Holland/Charonblk just bought himself a 6.4 truck block to bore and stroke for his high pressure monster, lol.

That's correct, the block is the same and heads are essentially the same other than some final machining. Again, compression is lowered to 10:1 from 11:1 in the SRT 392 which obviously contributes to the lower power rating as well. Good news is there is more meat above the top ring land so the motor should better tolerate boost even in stock form.

BGE engines are also saddled with the same ****** log manifolds used on the 5.7, unlike the shorty style headers SRT motors use. I can tell you from experience that this also contributes significantly to the power loss.

If your buying a used 6.4 I would buy a challenger motor. 485 FWHP. Truck 6.4 has 410 FWHP. Unless your running 25+ pounds of boost and nitrous, there is no advantage of using the truck block.
6.4 challenger motor has a forged crank. Just have to install forged rods and pistons to make good safe power.

I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but if you're going to go through the trouble of a piston swap then the BGE motor makes sense IMO. Especially if a cam swap is being done as well. You get a stronger block, better thermal dynamics, 356 aluminum heads, upgraded head bolts and engine hardware. The HP discrepancies between the BGE and SRT motors are primarily in the cam, compression and exhaust setups. But probably the biggest advantage of a BGE over the SRT is the starting price. Used SRT motors easily command 2-3k (typically) over the truck motor.

If you are just dropping in a stock take-out motor then I agree a SRT 6.4 is the obvious choice.

Only Reason i would go with the challenger motor is I am not comfortable swapping cams. i can swap heads, but I don't mess with cams. Lol

Cams are actually easy, especially if the motor is already out. Not too different then other parts that get swapped out. Plus that’s one of the best way to actually improve hp
