Dakota, where are you on this? Any change? The only reason I ask, is I developed a tick like this after my last oil change, I threw some lubegard and going to give it a few miles. I have listened to a lot of ticks on the net, some that are easily exhaust ticks, most get better when warm. and a lot of people complaining about injector noise. it seems some get really noisy. I think it might be cheap gas.

However, yours is a lot like mine, though mine is not quite as pronounced. And though, like yours, is more of warm engine problem. Mine starts cold without the noise , then it slow fades in as it warms up, but its only like 30 seconds before I hear it. Not sure how long yours takes. Your cold start sounds good and solid. The only thing different about mine, is though it fades in as it warms up. Afrer a good drive, it almost completely non-existent. So its like quite on start, , as warms up starts ticking a bit, and after running for 30 minutes or so driving normally, it seems almost completely quiet, you wouldnt know it, unless, you knew what you were listening for. SO it is there.

like I said, I have listened to a bunch of ticks on the net. lots of exhaust stuff. Timing when mine developed doesnt fit with this , and your experience as well. I have heard a lot of injector stuff and that is more like a rhythmic clatter. Yours, like mine, is pingy, and has a lower end sound to it , But I do get some sound in left side top end, Just less than listening under the wheel well. That bad lifter video in this thread, is very clattery on the bottom, but very easy to hear a collapsed needle bearing and crashing roller. You can almost hear how their is harmonic oscillation on the hammering of lifter. To me the lifter tick seems faster than the exhaust ticks (relative to rpm) ours seem to have the cadence of the exhaust tick. So, I am troubled trying to say what the problem is. Id bet it is a lifter, its just not a crashed or collapsed roller. Its probably something lacking lube in the lifter guides or maybe some sort of sticking in one of the lifters, I am considering throwing some seafoam at it. My guess the difference is mine may actually free up a bit when fully warm for a while, while yours does not.

You sound like you have tried a bunch of oils on this and have you changed filters each time? what filter are you using? I am considering dropping all new oil and filter, even though its got less than 1000 mi on it.
It sounds like the oils you have tried are all pretty much the same. Have you tried some PUP? or something with lots of Moly. I should be running about 250ppm with mine.

In the end, doesn't seem to be exhaust related, and it doesnt seem to be injector related. ( but worth trying better gas and a cleaner ) But, for the life of me, if a bad lifter, it makes almost no sense that you can have cold start
that sounds as good as yours does. Oil does thin when hot, youd have to have some really sticky oil to give you that much start up protection, Like stp motor honey stick. So, we are missing something here.

Thank you for the input. Still driving it daily and it’s just still ticking just as bad although still running great. I noticed the ticking is more pronounced in colder weather and now that it’s warmed up a little around here the ticking isn’t quite as loud, however it is still there and noticeable. It does have a little bit of a clatter on cold start that goes away after about 10 seconds (which I’ve heard is common), however the ticking after it warms up sounds to clean and consistent to be a lifter if that makes sense. I have tried penzoil platinum, but not ultra platinum. I’m currently running Redline 5w30 and it made no difference at all. As far as filters, I always ran carquest premium filters in all my vehicles but I noticed it caused my truck to have some lifter noise at cold start, which is assume is do to subpar anti drain back valve. Ive been using a motor craft the last 3 oil changes and it has definitely helped the cold start noise, only does it occasionally now. I really don’t think it’s lifters as I’ve mentioned before, as I I’ve tried a ton of oil and additives and none of them made a bit of a difference. It seems to loud to be injectors, plus I’ve tried additives and using higher fuel with no difference. Exhaust manifolds and gaskets are new so that can be ruled out too.

Maybe the last option for you is using conventional 5w20 oil, this oil kill my hemi tick after 2000km.

Any drawbacks to using conventional? Any brand in specific you recommend?

I was thinking more about the development of my tick. I will try to record it later. I said it started after I changed the oil, however that is not absolutely accurate. I have just bought the truck used, Ive put less than 1000 miles on it. It did not make any of this noise when i tested and purchased it. I decided to swap the oil in preventative effort with large filter because it seemed a bit slower to get fluids moving on cold start. And not knowing what the dealer put in it. It did have a mopar filter on it, I put a large RP on it.

As for the development of the tick. I did take the truck on 300 mile road trip with original oil. Nothing, no tick changed oil and filter, started it, no tick. took it down gas before another 300 mile road trip and checked the oil again, started again, no tick. got to destination 150 miles. restarted it to come back no tick. get home let it sit for 4 days. start it, cold start sounded ok, 30-60 seconds later, I am like wtf is this I am hearing? and its been their ever since.

It is really troubling, I didnt evne put a 1000 miles on the truck before this. It shouldnt be a OCI issue. It really doesnt even sound like an oil type issue. I am wondering if a long hwy trip followed by a 4 day sit, was the problem. Maybe it caused some sort of bleed down with the lifter.

Dakota,

I think the recommended oil is PUP (Pennz ultra platinum) I didnt realize this was a high moly oil. So, we can see that the trucks like the moly, and seems that RAM, knows too. So, I believe the PUP is a bout 250ppm. The problem with moly it does take time to plate out - but i hear it works better with zinc which plates out too. So perhaps why red line works well. I know you say that redline is not working for you. Don't dump it quite yet. give in a couple thousand miles, it has lots of detergents and needs time to plate both zinc and then moly. Some report going 1500 miles beforer going silent.

I am not against dino oil. It does have its place, and some swear by it. But give the redline a chance. I doubt anything would work better than redline with all the moly and zinc. remember this was how all the conventional oils were 30 years ago with these friction modifiers and antiwear additives. Actually, research the lifter stuff, it is a new phenomenon, but not just RAM has issue with. Its pretty much endemic to all manufacturers now. as these additives have been targeted by the EPA, we are seeing more engine damage. I wonder if the costs of manufacturing more cars, repair parts , repair labor and repair facilities off-sets the actual carbon footprint or pollutants footprint.

try some good gas and some injector cleaner first as well. Maybe there is some warpage with manifold on the exhaust, perhaps should have it tested for leaks The only other thing with your and my noise, it seems more bottom end that top end. Which would make believe if its not exhaust, it could be something in the bearings or perhaps piston slap, though, I dont know if that give more a top or bottom engine noise with the hemi. I am going to harbor freight to get a mechanics stethoscope to see if I can isolate, but mine seems to be coming from the driver side, back half of the block , and heard top and bottom, but definitely more noted from wheel well , rather than engine compartment.

I tried to actually get a video recording of mine today, but it was so mild today ( more than usual ) it was cooler only about 45 degrees, and did not seem to make much if any noise for the first 1-2 minutes started., wife took the truck , for about 15 miles, and came back , and was quiet. So, today seemed to be the best in while, maybe weather. I didnt hear the engine in the in between warm and cold state today. just cold. and later fully warm. So if it is this minimal , I should perhaps not worry. going to clean injectors, they are pretty clatty. I saw a video of something someone added , and man the injectors were quiet. Wish I could remember what it was.

Id do the cheapest easiest thing before you run and bring it in, if you not getting engine codes. Try a good gas , clean injectors, keep the redline for 1500 miles. Change to a different brand oil filter. I d, think that would quiet a lot of your truck, unless an exhaust leak ( at least make some difference in the sound if not eliminate it ) If no change after any of that, id go back looking at the exhaust.

I think the diagnoses strategy should be find an oil that will make notable change in the sound of worn lifters, maybe something heavy or additive with stabilizers just as a test. If a worn engine part, you would think , fresh oil, heavier oils, or additives would at least change the sound a tiny bit.

I’ve had redline in my truck for a little over 5000 miles and it still hasn’t made a difference. As I stated before I’ve already tried different fuel additives, higher quality fuel, a ton of different oil, oil additives/stabilizers etc. and nothing changes it. As I also mentioned previously, the exhaust manifolds and gaskets are new so it’s not an exhaust leak. At this point it’s been ticking for the whole 25,000 miles Ive personally put on it and it still runs great so I don’t really care anymore lol.

okay, didn't know you had red line in that long. Yep, I knew you had gone over the exhaust. Didn't know you did all the fuel stuff. Sorry, I missed it, been through the whole thread, just its been quite lengthy.

Sounds like there obviously other ticks, that we just don't know the cause. I saw in the 5th gen forum that guy had to have 4 engines replaced to solve a tick problem, that was likely his exhaust. So, you don't want to chase stuff unnecessarily that is for sure.

I am beginning to think that there a lot of people that have had engine replacements that didn't need them and may have something that was mis diagnosed.

I have an after market warranty, dont put too much into those, but dealer laid their reputation on covering it. So, there is a lot that can go wrong with 400 computers on board. I wont hesitate to call it in if need. However, I am so go to keep it out of the hands of the dealership if at all possible. But not to the point of ignoring something obvious. that would be stupid and negligent and really cause to deny the warranty claim. At the same time it keeps me from doing something to aggressive prophylactical.

I bought the truck knowing the potential for cam and lifter issues, also know that the trucks are more repairable and cheaper to fix than most other stuff out there. and they still can go 200k-300k before having failure. So, even at a worst case scenario, the truck is still worth fixing if some catastrophic failure down the road.

So, if anything , after all this , I am more content, unless something more significant raises its head. I am good. I will update you all when something changes, likely 120k miles from now lol.

If you are looking for oil that has high moly content, Toyota 0w20 & 0w16 as of 3/2021 VOA showed their oils to have moly in the 700 ppm range.

Sounds like one of your valve springs are starting to get worn I would take your scope if you got one and check mainly the left side as they have had a lot of problems with that side for some reason hopefully you can pin point the one that's going out and get it changed :} hope this helps you out

If it was valve springs how long would it take for one to let go? Like mentioned before I’ve put over 25k miles on it and the ticking hasn’t gotten better or worse and I drive the truck fairly hard.

Just changed the oil a few days ago and put in Pennzoil conventional 5w20. Only have about 100 miles on it but it seems like the tick is louder than it was before. Any suggestions?

Give it some time, more miles, won't do any more damage, wait till 1300 or 1500 miles.

well long story short mine has 260k miles on it and it was always doing fine with the tick it had and you could hear the tick from a distance i was driving to the store and pulled in and **** it started missing and from there it was a worn valve spring so guess its just a matter of time when it lets go

Wouldn’t a worn/broken valve spring cause running issues as well? Like running rough or a misfire?

it was always running good till that moment it started misfiring then all it was / was the spring
