First oil change for this truck. Synthetic was expensive!!!

PUP 0w40 is basically a 5w30, along with a few other 0w40's that should really have their own class but don't. Oil manufacturers can add more additives and still get the API donut, and these oils are really stout. The unfortunate thing is because it is a "40" weight guys are scared off from using it in the 5.7, but in realty it may be one of the best choices you could make for your 5.7. Guys are only reporting a jump of 2 on oil psi, and this product with it's high moly and GtL base is a very nice choice for hemi's. It shears so quickly because of the swing from 0 winter rating to weight, that it is in the 12's visc at operating within a few hundred miles.

How's that work for the 6.4 then? Should the 6.4 drivers be using a stout 5/30 instead? Or possibly a stout 0/30?

In most of our opinions 20w is to thin for these motors.

Yeah just like the Eco diesels that were blowing up using FCAs spec oil weight, the had to go to a heavier weight oil for those motors.
They always try to run to thin of oil to gain fuel mileage.

About 45% of the people here use a heavier oil then 5w20, and only one guy reported a CEL but didn't expand on it, makes you wonder if that was a true issue or not. Maybe he was mistaken, dunno. Guys are flat out running 40 weights with no issue in the 5.7. There are a few 0w40's that belong in their own class, they spend most of the time in the engine as a 5w30 or close on a long interval.

I might try 5qts of 5-30 the next time, and the other two 5-20, to make total of 7 qts/

I always turn MDS off, so would not probably make a difference?????

MDS has nothing to do with why FCA spec-ed 5w20 for the 5.7. The MDS lifters are the exact same part number as the 6.4 Hemi which specs 0w40. FCA spec-ed 5w20 for the 5.7 for fuel economy. Car manu's need to get every percentage they can on CAFE.

Like 69 said, FCA used to spec 5w30 for the Ecodiesels and have been respec-ed by FCA to 5w40 because of main bearing failures. I would suspect VM Motori had some say in going to 5w40.

No, other than trying to convince people to keep buying it, hah. Mobil 1 is typically a little cheaper and much easier to find. I don't see the benefits of extended drains when oil is so cheap compared to an engine. On our 4Runner, the oil filter is a huge pain to get to under a skid plate so I stopped doing halfway filter swaps when my wife bought it. Kind of made it pointless to run Amsoil. It's great oil but expensive and hard to find if you need something right away. Ram has to have Pennzoil, etc.

So can we use straight 0w-40 in our 5.7 Hemi's? And what's the difference between the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Euro 0W-40 and Penzoil Ultra Platinum 0W-40?
