That was my thought, why are you guys changing oil when the motor is so darn hot? I change mine first thing in the morning, all the oil has drained into the pan and the plastic bag trick over the steering works well, no melting...

Thanks for your service Sir John - ATW

Changing the oil while hot helps get the oil nice and circulated and helps warm sludge up so it drains easier. In my case I worked for a year as a lube tech at a chevy dealer in high school and then again for another year at a Ford dealer after college, so there was no opportunity to let the engine cool off. If your lucky you will get backed up so they sit in the parking lot for a half hour and cool off a little but most of the time the time between a car pulling into the parking lot and customer leaving was 10 to 25 minutes.

In your case you've got no choice. As for the sludge, I use Amsoil so I certainly hope there's no sludge buildup!

I usually warm mine up with a short lap around the block. Warm, not hot. I probably don't even need to do that except maybe in the winter. In the old days of 30W oil and sludge buildup we might have needed to get the oil hot to drain properly but in these days of 0W and 5W oil and no sludge, I don't see the point. It drains like water even when cold.

I just had my first oil replacement last weekend with the odo reading 550 miles, luckily I had a 40 mile drive down a freeway type road before I had the oil dumped = nice and hot as I lucked out and drove straight in:favorites13:

This isn't good news about the oil filter location. I have also always done my own oil changes, and was hoping to do this vehicle's, as well. I will have to peak underneath and see how bad it really is. Btw, my wife's 08 Yukon Denali has the world's best placement of both filter and drain plug - GM engineers get a "10" from me on that one! Oil change is about 5 mins on it.

My 2013 F150 Ecoboost had a stupid oil filter location too, but at least Ford put an oil filter drain catch pan right underneath the oil filter. It neatly allowed you to drain your oil filter oil.

It's a pain in the ass for sure, but doable.

These guys are babies from the sound of it. Oh it's sooooo horrible, boo hoo. :flipthebird: It is not even remotely difficult to reach or remove.

I had no problems removing mine, with my hand, and somehow I didn't have oil all over the place. Me thinks some of you are just in a rush.

Especially considering the extended intervals...

Again, another badass internet Ranger here. There's so many of you on the internet. :flipthebird:

I don't really think anyone said it was hard to reach or remove....at least that's not what I was saying. What I was saying is once you start spinning it the oil obviously dumps out (and keeps coming out once off) and you cannot get a oil drain pan underneath it because, among other things, the electric power assist steer box is right there. Unlike you, some members actually came back with some good ideas to remedy that. I reread your post just now to see if there was any value in it....nope, there wasn't. :hmm:

Another internet cry baby, just as many of you guys. :flipthebird:

How many posts in this thread complaining about how hard it is? Your first post?

No joke about the oil filter. The worst place I've ever change one. What a mess! I have to figure out a cleaner way to change it.

What value did your post add besides trying to tell me off? Look, I get it, internet sarcasm doesn't come across. Sorry for hurting your feelings and getting you so upset about my statement. I should of used :roflsquared: instead of the finger smilie.

My advice was take your time. I've encountered worse. So I didn't find it as difficult and couldn't understand the hubris. I didn't have it pouring all over and down my hands or on the steering rack. My trailblazer has it's oil filter in a similar place, but I'd say 4 degrees worse. So for me, it was like the norm. Maybe for others thats a weird place.

Wow, you're kind of ignorant (no sarcasm intended). You quoted my post where I clearly was saying it was a very messy oil filter change, but you tried to call me out on saying it was so "hard to change". Stupid.

Anyway, I was just trying to give other members a heads up on how messy it can be. Like I said, other members came back with some good ideas to keep the mess under control. All you did was come out name calling people in this thread because they thought it was messy too. For some reason you're hung up on how "difficult" while most are talking about how "messy".

I will not reply in this thread any further.

Just curious, but how hard is it to remove the plastic air dam right below the filter?

It was kinda messy because the filter is in a spot where the air dam is actually pinches your arm when you reach in to get it.

it was my first oil change on my truck, but with more practice, it will be easier.

See I didn't think that air dam got in the way unless my express doesn't have the same one you're talking about.

People can say whatever they want, if it makes you feel like a tough guy to say the filter isn't a pain to do, by all means go ahead. But the fact is, compared to plenty of other vehicles it is more difficult to access. Period, the end.

Don't trust the dealer or oil change places. I always change my own. Its pretty easy to do.
