First Oil change on my new to me 2017 5.7

Hello All,

Looking for advice on my first oil change for my 2017 5.7 which I purchased at 31k miles. Now I am at 33k and my dash says only at 70% for oil change. After reading the forums it seems many do not go by the advice of the dash. I have owned Silverado's since 1988 and always went by the dash once it became available without any engine issues.

I always get my oil changed at my my local dealer.

Really 2 questions
1. Dash or go with 3-5k between regular oil changes?
2. Go with dealer offered synthetic and if so switch to the synthetic recommended change frequency?

Honestly to make life easy and just because I’m OCD about it I do every 5000km to keep it simple and easy to track.

It is so simple to change the oil on our trucks that I would never go to a dealer for it. You don’t even have to left the front end to access the drain plug and filter.

Stick to a quality oil like pennzoil ultra platinum or Redline and a good filter such as the royal purple 10-48. If you haven’t already check out the synthetic motor oil poll on this section of the forum and read through the nearly 100 pages. There is a lot of good info in there

Brent summed it up. pick your oil first. like many many others, ill never go with dealer oil. and ill always run 5w30, not 5w20 in my hemi. ill always run redline. do some research. ive seen what it can do. PUP is a great oil too. for me...its only rp 20820 filter. its the bigger one. ive seen great results from it. not sure on oci? send a sample to blackstone labs after 5kmi to see. do some reading. and more reading. how hands on do you want to be? if you ate concerned about warranty keep playing roulette with dealer fill. again...im not running thin 5w20 in my hemi.

Also, you will need an extra elbow to get the filter out, LOL. Have a rag ready.

I've been running AMSOIL 5W-20 , NO ISSUES have 18000 miles on truck.

Oh and another tip. Take a large ziplock bag and put it around the oil filter, loosen the filter and let the oil drain into the bag before fully removing filter.

This will save you a big mess of oil you’d have to clean up after

I will be following the oil life monitor on mine. I have been doing so on my old 2011 Chrysler T&C van w the 3.6 pentastar(usually around 7500-8000 miles between changes). It currently has 146K miles and uses no oil, and makes no odd noises. That van was used often to tow my popup(weighs probably 2700lbs or so), so it did not have an easy life.

If you want to know for sure there is only one way to know, send a sample to blackstone labs and they will test your oil and set your interval. The largest concern with low rpm v8's as far as oil life would be base level, or something they call TBN. Every truck is different, you would change the oil to whatever synthetic you wanted at 7500 miles, and they would tell you the tbn level, but that is a ten dollar extra charge, so don't forget to order it if you do. They send you a kit for free, no info needed but your address. When you send the sample back, you pay whatever the current rate is like 28 bucks plus ten for tbn. This will tell you the condition of your engine, and tell you exactly what interval you will have to maximise your oil and not hurt the engine.

Look at the blackstone thread, I believe it is a sticky. Absent that info, everything is just a guess on our part, but most synthetics have more starting tbn and tbn retention. So they can go further then conventional and not compramise your engine. General rule would be 4-5k miles on a good conventional like pennzoil yellow bottle, and double that on a top synthetic. I'd look at moly levels as well, a very important additive hemi's really need. The engineers at fca made a hemi specific oil with 250ppm moly, so I would run a moly oil. All the Pennzoil's have moly, Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is their top of the line, and was made with fca support as a hemi specific oil, and is the most common oil used by ram forum members. If you have another brand in mind ask the question and I'm sure half the forum could assist you in the formula, we do discuss this often here.

Next, when you are out of warranty, you may decide to go with 5w30 and a spun micro glass filter, read my oil filter thread in my sig. Fram Ultra, it has to be Ultra, is the easiest spun microglass filter to get. This will allow you to go over 3 months without filter degradation that all paper filters go through. So if you are gonna use the dealer, either go on a 3 month strategy with their cheapest options pyb or opt for synthetic, but you must pair the synthetic strategy with a synthetic filter to fully take advantage of the technology that allows for longer oil chnage intervals.

If at all possible, I'd do my own oil changes if I were you. good luck, Burla

good place to start, follow the instr sheet and make sure your sample fills the bottle, they need it full for one of their tests. To maxmise the cost make sure you have chosen the oil you plan on using. m1, penzoil platinum, and quacker state ultimate durabilty are some populr choices and can be gotten off walmart shelf real cheap. 5 qrt jugs are usually around 20 bucks.

I use the Fram XG2 as it is cheap and has synthetic media. They get great reviews on the Bob oil site. It is larger but fits just fine. A tad bit harder to get off due to clearances but even the small one makes a mess. I wrap a ziploc bag around the filter after I break it loose.

These days you can run 5000 miles on conventional oil but I run mine about 8500 miles on synthetic. Currently using Penn Ultra Platinum due to warranty. I sneak in a little 0W-40 to my 5W-20 that I have receipts for. It still ticks though.

The larger filter will only make a few ounces of difference. I still put in about the same amount required. 7 quarts. Also, the full mark on my truck is a good bit below the level when I put in 7 quarts. I would not go by that. Put in the right amount and scribe your dipstick where the proper level lines up. That's odd you need 7.5 to get to the fill mark but may depend on year.

When it comes to oil changes I’ve always stuck to 3k even though the oil may be capable of 5 or more I believe the average filter isn’t,no matter what anyone says. My ram had the oil dumped at 400 miles and my longtime fav put in.But I treasure the few times I’m in charge of the break in
And no archoil till 3k
