Hey guys, im new to this forum. I was going to sell my 4x4 5.9 ram, but decided to keeolp it. And now im considering pulling the heads, dropping the oil pan, replacing the rings and everything in the heads besides the valves unless its recommended to do the valve guides and seals. Basically looking to freshen it up over the course of maybe two weekends. Was thinking some stiffer springs for more throttle response also? Not to sure. Would appreciate some insight and advice as to how far i should go. Dont want to pull the motor, has 137k

If you pull the heads off throw em away lol they'll be cracked.

I'm curious as to why you want to do a ring job and rebuild the heads with only 137k? Is something wrong with it?

dapepper cautionary is well founded. The 360 heads have about a 50/50 chance of being cracked, so it's imperative you Magnaflux them. I don't think heavier valve springs, in and of themselves is going to improve your throttle response. You probably will need to replace the v. guides, maybe the valves, too. Do a three angle seat grind, and whoever recondition and assembles the heads, I highly recommend you have the intake and exhaust ports vacuum checked to make sure valves/seats and guides/stems are sealing properly. If you can, power hone the cylinders with a head torque plate, and main caps torqued to spec.

Are you going to be pulling the engine for this overhaul? Honestly I wouldn't waste the money to have the heads magnafluxed, just buy a new set of stock EQ heads that way you know you'll be good. Heavier springs won't allow for better response unless you're looking at a bigger camshaft. If you're just looking at rings to replace I wouldn't put all that time and effort to just do rings unless you go full rebuild.

Stiffer valve springs are pointless on a stock engine. They are for high rpm engines with high-lift cams to prevent valve float. I'm talking high rpm.
