I have a 2011 ram 1500 with a 6 inch lift. 3 years ago, I kept hearing this grinding noise while driving and it would get louder if I was driving along a wall or barrier on the highway. A shop I took it to said it could be the front driveshaft, so they removed it and I never heard the noise again. Well I’m currently in the process of possibly trading my truck in so I put the front driveshaft back in and the noise comes back. Has anybody else experienced this issue or know what may cause it/what to do to fix it? I have the proper spacer on the driveshaft and my mechanic who reinstalled it for me said he couldn’t hear any noise but it’s hard to hear unless you are next to a wall or barrier of some sort!

My advice. Put it when you trade it. They won’t hear it lol. I know I know. Not great advice but hey:anitoof: somethings not sitting at the right angle if it’s making nose.

Front driveshaft is at the wrong angle with the lift. On wranglers you can only go so high until an aftermarket driveshaft is needed.

Spoke with a drive shaft company here in Houston and they made a good point. If the driveshaft is out, it means the gears aren’t moving in the transfer case but when it’s back in, the gears have something to move them when free spinning. So I’m just gonna take it back out and make sure to put it in the morning I trade my truck in lol

Wanted to give an update on this for any future thought. So i sold the truck and bought a brand new 2020 ram sport Laramie. But i knew the driveshaft thing would be an issue. I bought a used driveshaft from the scrap yard, put it in, and all of the sudden the noises were gone. My assumption is the original driveshaft was at that angle for so long (since the truck was lifted), that the inside of the shaft was worn out and needed to be repaired.

Definitely not lifting the new one, if anything I’ll be doing a leveling kit just for a little more clearance on the front especially since I bought a 2wd
