Not sure how to search for older posts. I have a 2016 3500 diesel with the Aisin transmission, 22k miles. I am being asked to purchase the extended warranty. My question is that I would like to gain some fuel mileage. Is there any way to get an increase from what I am getting now? I hear those boasting higher mileage than what I am getting and just wondering what is going on with my truck.

Slow down and don’t believe all the ********* you read.

Keep RPM under 2k. Mine has 3.42 gears and 68rfe but the difference in MPG between 70mph and 80mph is substantial. My father has a dually with 4.11 and gets 3-4mpg less than me at highway speeds (70-75).

Other then changing driving habits no. I don't believe those people claiming some of the ridiculous mpg numbers I have seen posted. They may "think" they are getting that but they are calculating wrong or something

Driving habits are not the problem and I also am calculating correctly. Just wondering if deleting the DEF actually changes anything. I have had zero issues with the truck and the warranty expires in 3 months. Just wondering if I should get the extended warranty and not change anything to void that warranty. Thanks for all the responses.

I didn't say it was a problem just said that's about the only way to gain anything. There is no magic pill for these newer truck (unfortunately) Every report I have seen on deleting gained little to no mpg on the later model trucks. I think it did for the 2011-2013 models but not the newer ones.

MPG posts make my head spin. You’ll get the “ I get 18-20mpg on highaway”. They later say they drive 65mph. Almost every road in Texas is 70-80 speed limit. So I’m not going 65 to to save a few pennies. Then I just flat out don’t believe the peeps that say” I tow my 32ft tt at 80mph and see 20mpg”.

I've noticed that the difference between 65 and 70 mph is almost 1/2 mpg. Now that's according to the lie a meter, but it seems that 65/70 is the cliff.

Yeah. That’s what’ve I’ve noticed in mine as well. If I get stuck behind somebody going 65 it’ll climb pretty steady. Soon as I’m free she’s gone again. 65 is just sooooo slow when it’s a 75 zone :emotions122:

Lol, I agree. Drives me crazy. Going back and forth with a guy on the Cummins forum that says he gets like 34mpg in his truck and we should all be getting at least 20+ average (city and highway driving) across the board.
I have never seen over 18.5 in my truck. And that is driving very conservatively.
Average over the past 30k miles is 15.6 mixed driving and around 11 give or take towing a decent load and that is pretty consistent with 99% of the owners out there.
If you are driving 65 on a major US highway that is 75+ you are a hazard to everyone around you.

Considering my Father’s is a 2012 that has no smog equipment, 4” straight, etc and he is 3-4mpg behind my stock 2013 at the same speeds and same roads I don’t think deleting DEF will help a whole lot. keep RPM below 2k.

Once we are loaded down and towing at 62-65 And I’ve locked out 6th we make close to the same MPG.

You have to watch the Canadian (or overseas) posters about mileage. In the early days of the EcoDiesel, there was a bunch of Canadians reporting consistently higher fuel economy than anyone stateside. They were using UK gallons. 1 UK gallon is 1.2 US gallons

He's probably one of the guys I'll pass while driving through the thumb...lol.
I usually set the cruise to the speed limit of 55 while up there during hunting season(always watching for deer), and always seem to pass some old geezer driving a Ram or Chevy HD diesel.

Before deleting and with 34 inch mud terrains, I averaged around 14.5 mpg +/- .5. After deleting it jumped to 17 mpg +/- .5 with the same tires. My driving would have the biggest impact on whether it was +.5 or -.5. I drive 75-80 mph on Texas highways in all my vehicles, and could probably get better mpg by slowing down. I just simply don't care to.

My diesel car did not gain any mileage when I deleted it. It continues to average 43 mpg if I drive normal and about 40 mpg if I drive it like I stole it in sport mode for most of the tank. This is with a 60 hwy/40 city driving ratio. Best I ever got from that car was 47 mpg. The computer showed over 50 mpg for the highway portion of my trip(about 300 miles) and then dropped the other 200 miles which was mostly city. It is hard to get a true all highway figure in that car because it will go well over 600 miles on a 15 gallon tank.

I am OCD about my mileage in all the vehicle I have owned and hand calculate every time. I am averaging at this point 18.4 MPG with a 70% highway driving. Have had a couple of tanks that got me a little over 19 MPG. I do the speed the limit, nothing more. In town, I drive normally and do not hot dog it from light to light either.

That being said, my results are not atypical and actually put me in the top 1/3rd of the Fuelly.com stats. The majority of fuel mileage savings is going to be your driving style.

Never took the comment about driving habit the wrong way! Just wanted to get to the bottom of getting better mileage by, deleting the DEF, programmer or something else. After hearing others on here, I think I am leaving it be. The posts about driving under 2k RPM, I have never needed to take the truck over 2500 RPM even pulling a loaded trailer thru the mountains of my West Virginia home. All the power that is ever needed is there.

The hazard is the people driving too short sighted , too distracted, too impatient to adjust for slower traffic. Many fleet vehicles are speed limited to 62-65 for safety and insurance purposes.

I highly doubt this blanket statement is accurate or valid. I drive 60-65 MPH on the interstates in all my vehicles all the time (towing and non-towing) and have never caused a hazard, obstruction, or dangerous condition d/t my speed. Many drivers do the same. I would argue the opposite viewpoint and declare speed tends to be the leading cause of fatalities and major auto accidents across the US. Maybe it's just NHTSA marketing hype????
