I have a 2016 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 36 Gallon Tank. I run this truck 50 miles past when my low fuel indicator comes on and the gauge is reading almost below empty. I fill it up and am only able to get 26 gallons in. This means I have 10 gallons of fuel that is not registering? Does anyone else have this issue and what can be done to fix it? I'd like to have that extra 10 gallons of range.

I believe it’s a 32gal tank. I had the same exact fill up, 26gal.

I thought the larger tank was 32 gallons. You have the larger tank but the tank is programmed for the 25gal tank. There has been rumors of a fix but so far nothing has materialized.

I definitely have the 32 gal. Only takes 26 to fill. Unless there is 4/5 gal reserve when the light comes on.

These threads keep popping up. I have the 32 gallon tank and don't need to worry about it. I suggest the guys who are worried about it, bring a tank of fuel in the truck with you and drive it until it turns itself off, then see how many gallons you can get in it.

Hi extragoldbrown,
I understand how this issue might be concerning. We suggest having a dealer look into this. Please feel free to send us a private message if you would like any assistance with this.

When I was in today for an oil change they told me to make an appointment and they would take a look. Said it was probably the fuel pump and had never heard of anyone else with the problem. Ram Cares is there a fix for it or am I going in wasting my time.

I was told one of my recently performed recalls would correct this (can't remember which one) by the dealer when i asked about it. Once I got it back it still will only take 26 gallons max even when deep in the red zone. Last week I took it in for an oil change and safety campaign (U53) and when picking it up asked the service writer about this, his answer is classic; his exact words were "mine is like that too, RAM did it on purpose so you'd have a reserve and won't run out of gas" Ok but 6 gallons? Seems excessive to me, "Nope that's what they did, it's good to have". I walked away.

So this has been an issue forever, years to be exact. So there's multiple scenarios possible here
  1. FCA actually did this on purpose and doesn't care
  2. FCA is not sure how to fix it
  3. FCA has not instructed dealers how to fix it
  4. Dealers don't care, don't know or want to know
  5. All of the above
I'm going with #5. It's sad, being older I remember when you went to the dealer they honestly cared and listened to you. They made an honest effort to get your vehicle corrected to your satisfaction, not theirs. Now service writers push paper, many have no clue about the issues and have no desire to learn either. Really sad is this is industry wide and not just FCA.

Correct. You just have to do the math in liters.

26 gallon is 99 liters
32 gallon is 121 liters.

You can also alter the gas gauges. I'll include a photo.

You can also program the fuel system as well but I don't have any guidelines or frame of reference on where to start.
