I keep hearing about upgrading gears if you're going to be running 35s or bigger. I also hear its very beneficial. What does this mean? What does it entail and what's the cost? Also how do I find out what gears I'm currently running?

There is a sticker on the left side of your diff. on the axle tube that has your gear ratio on it or look at your window sales sticker or get a build sheet for your truck. A lower gear ratio will give you better acceleration and some people have said they get better gas mileage. If you have a 2 wheel drive, new gears can be purchased from Moe's Performance, who is a vendor on this site.

Most likely you have 3.21 and the 8 speed. The 8 speed will compensate a lot for the bigger tires but never a bad idea to upgrade to 3.92s or 4.10s you can get it done for probably 1100-1500 in a 2wd.

The last times I've had gear changes were in a mustang gt, cost $400. Also in a jeep jk unlimited, cost $1300.

If you cant find/see the sticker indicating the ratio on the rear axle, go here - Ram Trucks - Contact Us and click on "Equipment listing" and enter your vin #. It'll give you the build sheet for your truck, which will indicate if you have the 3.21 or 3.92 axle ratio.

New to towing. My 2500 6.7L is geared at 3.73 (Stock) what should I have it geared at for towing a 33' 5th wheel?

It should do good just the way it is unless you tow in the mountains all the time. I think your next step up is a 4.10.

ok looks like I have he 3.21s I'm going to add a 4-5" lift so maybe thinking of running 35/12.50R20 tires so which would be the best gears to upgrade to?

Either 4.10 or 4.56. 4.56 if your planning on ever going any bigger than 35" tires.

I don't think 3.21's should be an option for the Ram Hemi truck line up. I have never heard anyone say "looking for a more tame gear ratio....any suggestions?"

Problem is, the buyer and the sales department don't know about axel ratios until it is too late.

What was a 50 dollar option now has the potential to cost you a couple thousand. That sucks bro.

Found this for you.....

As for the tire height goes a axle of 3.40 with 35s would be the same as a 33in tire and 3.21s. Now you have to take into account extra weight of the tire and less wind resistant from being lifted. Personally I wouldn't go past 3.92 if your happy the way your truck drives. Going to 4.56 I think requires modification to the housing (others will be able to and see for sure) 4.10 I think fits but those are pretty steep gears after calculating it and taking into account you can get oem gears in a 3.92 that would be the direction I would take.

awesome thank you for the input. I'm definitely going to look into upgrading once the lift and bigger tires are getting put on
