I hear what you are saying, I don't need a diesel, I also don't need the power that the 6.4 puts out, but I want want want want.
Here's the deal, if I knew I could get 20 MPG on the 6.4, like I do on my 5.7, I would go gasser.
I am spoilt from my 5.7, I will be giving up a beautiful car like ride going 2500.
But, if I do go 2500, I must get the better of the 2 MPG motors.

One thing to keep in mind is the 2500 will ride real rough compared to a 1500. When I got rid of my crappy Reble last month, I could of purchased any truck I wanted. And after test driving many 1500 and 2500 trucks with 5.7, 6.4 and Cummings engines, I decided I did not like the smelly high maintenance Cummings, or the rough riding 2500, or the funky air ride suspension, and ended up ordering a loaded 1500 Sport crew cab with the 5.7. This will be the last new truck I plan to buy before I retire in 2 years and could not be happier.

My question is how are you getting 20 MPG with your 5.7??? Is that from the lie o meter EVIC or your own tracking?

Based on data from 167 vehicles, 7,073 fuel-ups and 2,328,964 miles of driving, the 2015 Ram 1500 5.7 gets a combined Avg MPG of 15.83 with a 0.06 MPG margin of error.

The 2500 and Cummins is a lot of tuck for what you describe as towing. With the rougher ride and the higher cost for both the 2500 and the Cummins as well as higher maintenance it would be a lot to only tow a couple thousand pounds. With all the new emissions stuff on the Cummins if you aren't working it regularly it will give you issues down the road.

Get a 1500 Longhorn, itneill probably be cheaper than a 2500 Cummins Laramie and will ride better, cheaper maintenance, and get the same mileage.

Hey Mark,

Don't mean to be the stick in the mud here but any chance you'd wanna wait 12 months? The new "DT" redesign on the 1500s should be out (MY2019) and the 2018s will almost certainly go on sale.

We're so late in the model cycle that it would suck to order a 2018 (1500 or 2500) and then be staring down the barrel of a totally new, better model in less than a year.

If i fuel up and do a totally highway run, empty, I'm up over 19mpg average according to the dash meter, even if it's off some that ain't bad. And i only have 1600 miles on the truck to date. But i get it, the Cummins is a beast. No doubt, i just don't need one and don't like all the emissions crap on modern diesels. (Regen, def, etc)

I was even going to stay with the stockers, 3.42, I could be talked into the 3.73s.

3.73 and 4.10 only available Behind gas motor in 2500. 3.42 is only axle available for Cummins 2500. No aisin option either.

You guys all make good points, I read the problems that a guy here had with his new CTD and all and it has got me sceeeeeert, left him stranded and all just over the emissions stuff.
I don't really want a 2019 model, I wanted to get the 2018 because I did not want the new change, I know, they will probably be better but am willing to take that chance.
Practical reasons, a 1500, 5.7 is all I really need.
And yes, I get 20/21 all the time with my 5.7, I just don't drive it hard, at least 99% of the time.

Exactly, best to avoid the first model year of a new vehicle if at all possible.

Yep, I couldn't believe the difference in the seating leather between the Laramie and the Longhorn/Limited trims. My 2013 is a Laramie and when it came time to buy a tow vehicle, I took a look at the leather in a Longhorn, the seating comfort (this is subjective of course) was much more supportive. I figure since I'm going to traveling America pulling an RV I might as well be as comfortable as I can get.

I certainly would not want the stiff ride in a 2500 if I did not need it to haul/tow with. My 1500 rides like a car... my firend's 2016 2500 is too stiff unless loaded up with gear or big load on the rear...
I luv my 5.7 with 8 spd and 3.21 gears and the gas mileage I get.

I keep going back and forth on whether or not to buy a new Ram in 2018 and I'm thinking more and more that upgrading to a 2500 might be the right choice, but I don't want to downgrade to the 6spd.
This might make it worth waiting another year and going for a 2500.

Anyway just a thought.

Are these rumors based on anything more than internet speculation because none of the current 8sp transmissions, including the one in the hellcat, are rated for the GCWR of a 2500.

Ok, guys, I have the 3.21 rear end, at 60 MPH, in 8th gear, my RPMs are 1400.
I have the stock size 20 inch tires, with the 3.92, can any one tell me the RPMs?
If I stay with a 1500, I may also stay with the 3.21 gears.

The math yields 64 MPH at 1,400 RMPs with a 3:21 axle ratio in eight gear (1,300 would be just under 60 MPH). Same RPMs and same eight gear with 3:92 axle ratio would give you 52.5 MPH.

It's not leather, it's vinyl. And it still has the same cloth inserts with the embossed tread pattern.

I just traded a 2500 for a 1500. The 2500 was my daily driver and the ride really sucked. I hated every minute of driving it. I love my new 2017 1500....smoooth..
My wife told me to get rid of the 2500 and get another truck, OR get another wife!!!!
