Anyone notice a big difference from going to a cold air setup over a drop in intake either power or mpg

You will notice some difference, but lets face it, at 390 hp stock, you'd need about a 10% increase to really FEEL something. And 10% is 39 Hp!

A good plastic, not metal, CAI will remove the factory articulated intake tube from the equation reducing turbulence and back pressure and and a much larger surface area filter to put as much colder, denser air as possible ready at the throttle body when the engine wants it.

What you will get is slightly better throttle response, fewer down shifts on hills, a general increase in driveability and an MPG maybe two. When you pair that with future additions like a free flowing muffler and a ported throttle body or go all the way to long tube headers and a torque converter, and of course a custon tune, then you will get that neck snap you wanted when you were in high school.

Depending on what CAI you go with you'll add a little rumble under the hood or a lot of ear splitting throttle noise.

I like the better than OEM look of the S&B, but a lot of the 1/4 milers on RF like the olde time Hemi hat look of the Vararam. It even has an orange option like the muscle car era Hemi air filter cover. ---->>>>preferred vendors---->>>> have both of these.

Unless you just want noise, I would avoid the open top design CAIs like K&N, AFE, Airaid, etc.

I have the muffler already just a magnaflow weld in..
Just trying to figure out if the extra 250 is really worth spending on a system vs drop in because everyone seems to have a different answer

I guess it depends on your overall plan for your truck. If you plan on putting a lot of mods on it plus a tune, all the mods work very well with each other and are tied nicely with the tune. The tune brings out the best of your mods.

The Vararam is what most go for, for performance, not the look. We have them on sale right now. If theres any questions you have, please let us know. Vararam

There are a few key points that make a true cold air intake perform much better than a simple drop in filter. The stock airbox isn't bad, but it only pulls air from the passenger fender. The S&B kit comes with a larger airbox and a second air scoop that faces forward behind the passenger headlight. Next, the stock intake tube looks like an accordion. Replacing that with a smooth tube will flow much better.

If you are looking for the best overall performance, then you want to go with the Vararam kit. The Vararam is actually designed to force air into the motor. The filter sits in a tray on top of the motor that then seals to the bottom of your hood. As you drive, all the air that comes through your front grille is forced up and into the filter tray. From there, the air has nowhere to go, but straight down your throttle body. This forced air intake will always show the best peak gains. The faster you drive, the more air is coming in, and the more power you will make.

I read somewhere that the Vararam doesn't seal very well with the sport hood, is this true?

I was wondering the same thing about the vararam and sport hood. Which is funny since we have the fake, decorative scoops.

I've seen a neat trick to make the sport hoods funtional, but it's some work and money.
A guy took a polished sheet of light duty aluminium, spread it across the bottom of his hood and attached it with pop rivets.
He then cut a hole on the passenger side of the sheet aluminium, that sealed to his airbox (airraid),then he cut openings in the fake hood scoops.
He did a nice job,and i gotta admit it looks pretty trick when he opens the hood, not sure how much ram-air effect you'd get from the low mounted twin scoops, but it's a neat idea on how to make the Sport hood funtional
