I posted a while back about my upcoming purchase of a Ram 1500/2500 4x4. Since then my needs have changed, I no longer need the 2500 for towing/hauling a car trailer.

Anyways, I work for a local Subaru dealership and just yesterday we took in a 2006 Ram 1500 QC SLT 2wd Hemi w/ 68,400 miles. Overall its in really good condition, just needs a good detail inside and out. The only issue is it has aftermarket Weld Evo forged wheels with some 33x12.5x20 Kuhmo MT tires that are super noisy. The wheels themselves are pretty nice looking and after doing a little research appear to somewhat pricey (around $300 each?). The tires would be perfect for someone who actually plans to go off road.

Personally I'd rather have some OEM 20's and some nice all season tires. Hopefully someone is selling a set or I'd be happy to trade the Welds straight up.

We ended up putting $12,300 in the vehicle. I can buy it for $500 over cost or $12,800 plus tax. It appears that this vehicle has a retail value of about $16,000.

I figure I'll have to put about $400-500 for some used OEM wheels, another $600-700 for tires (with my discount), I intend to perform the 60k service because I have doubts in the previous owner.

I guess my question is if this is a good purchase for roughly $14,000 after the cost of the vehicle, tax, and whatever wheels/tires/maintenance cost.

Is that about right or should I hold out for another truck? I would like 4x4 but its highly unlikely I'd find one similar to this for under $15k.

Right now I'm driving an 06 Jeep Commander 4x4 w/ the Hemi, so I know I want that engine again. I really don't have a "need" for a 4x4 but I feel like I'll kick myself if I don't.

I really cannot spend more than $14-15k on a truck. Maybe I should just get something with higher miles and get the 4x4 option? I hate buying vehicles!!! haha

i would really get 4x4, it has paid for it's self on my truck. One example, pulling a 14 foot lund out of the river up a steep grade made of sand.

I purchased an 05 Hemi 1500 4X4 with 55k on the clock 3 years ago for $13,000, so that would probably be a good deal. On;y thing is the 4X4, which I agree with suzukiquadrider in the fact that I would wait for one. Who knows, you don't plan on needing it, but you never know. You will really regret it if you ever get into that sticky situation

Now that is an awesome deal! You must have gotten lucky there. I'm looking for an 04-07 model judging by my budget of $14-15k. I would have thought I could find a nice 04-05 Hemi QC 4x4 with less than 100k miles within that range but its been tough.

Yea, I did, lol, but it is sitting in the junkyard now and I have moved on to bigger and better things. Just keep an eye out and just get what you really want, it will show up eventually and you will not have any regrets.

Those deals do show up, but rarely. IMO, pass on it and keep looking

I'm really starting to feel the same way. I think it was a matter of convenience that got me interested.

My grandpa used to tell me when I was 16 or 17: "boy, all that 4x4 means is you are going to have to find a bigger tractor to pull you out of somewhere you never should have been in the first place" he was an old farmer. That being said I really wish I had a 4x4 but I love my truck.

Imo the 4X4 is worth the extra $$$. now that depends on where you live and what you plan on doing with the truck.

When I bought my truck my wife told me that if I was going to get a new truck it HAD to be a 4X4. well I haven't regretted one minute of it.

In January of 05 I baught my 2005 quad 5.7 4x4 with leather 20 rb4 Nav moonroof msrp of 40800 I paid 23500 with 1500 miles on it. I was in the same boat as you working at a dealer and some fool had to have a hummer pickup after the auto show and paid off his lease and turned it in, lucky me i guess. Search Craig's list Detroit or start calling some dealers in the Detroit metro, you'll find one. You work at a dealer so you know. I don't know where you are wonky might be a good deal but in Detroit you may be able to find a 4x4

Sound like a good deal but I brought a 06 2wd and my wife got tried of me complaining about the 2wd so she said get what you want so I trade my 06 2wd for a 2011 4x4. It's good to have a 4x4 when you need it than need it and not have it.

Not sure where you're located but here in KC, Mo we get plenty of snow in the winter. That is the main reason I bought a truck with 4x4. I think the price is pretty fair for the truck but I wouldn't buy a truck without 4x4 in my opinion.
